Ultrasound and intrarenal Doppler (IRD) are commonly used to evaluate renal perfusion. The renal resistive index, intrarenal venous flow patterns, and renal venous stasis index are useful indicators for predicting renal dysfunction, intravenous congestion, and the risk of acute kidney injury. IRD provides supplementary information and helps with early diagnosis in severe patients.

Association of Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound-Derived Kidney Cortical Microvascular Perfusion with Kidney Function

Summary: Individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) often have decreased kidney cortical microvascular perfusion, which may lead to worsening kidney function over time. This study investigated the use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) to quantify kidney cortical microvascular perfusion in individuals across the spectrum of kidney function. The results showed that CEUS-derived kidney cortical microvascular perfusion biomarkers were associated with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), suggesting potential prognostic value.
