Masticatory performance in oral function assessment: Alternative methods

Yoshiki Imamura et al.

Summary: By comparing different diagnostic tools, it is possible to screen masticatory function effectively, leading to early diagnosis and potential treatment. The results of the study suggest that a color-changing gum test, a mixing ability test with visual analysis, and a mixing ability test with opto-electronical analysis can be considered useful screening alternatives.

Dental status and its correlation with polypharmacy and multimorbidity in a Swiss nursing home population: a cross-sectional study

Noemi Anliker et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the correlation between oral health status and polypharmacy and/or multimorbidity in three Swiss nursing homes with integrated dental care. The findings showed that patients with poor oral health status had a higher prevalence of multimorbidity and polypharmacy. Age was negatively correlated with tooth loss, while a higher number of remnant roots was associated with specific medications linked to salivary dysfunction (e.g., antihypertensive drugs and central nervous system stimulants).

Impact of Wearing Dentures on Dietary Intake, Nutritional Status, and Eating: A Systematic Review

P. Moynihan et al.

Summary: The review found that wearing full (5/7 studies) or partial (3/3 studies) dentures has a positive impact on nutritional status, but no clear direction of effect on dietary intake. It is shown that wearing dentures compromises eating function and eating-related quality of life, but also has a positive impact on eating-related quality of life.

Summary: The study evaluated the reliability of smartphone camera images in assessing masticatory performance and found that they may occasionally underestimate this performance compared to a flatbed scanner analysis. However, smartphone images still provide a reliable method for assessment.

Periodontitis and peri-implantitis in elderly people experiencing institutional and hospital confinement

Frauke Mueller et al.

Summary: An increasing number of elderly people retain their natural teeth into old age, which creates a challenge for maintenance, especially when patients become dependent on care. Periodontal and peri-implant diseases are more prevalent in elderly individuals, and this may be due to poor oral hygiene, immunosenescence, and the increased risk of developing chronic diseases. Chronic periodontitis and aspiration pneumonia demonstrate how poor oral health can lead to systemic diseases. The scale of periodontal disease in old age represents a public health issue.

Methodological considerations when measuring oral health-related quality of life

Daniel R. Reissmann

Summary: This review article discussed the importance of dental patient-reported outcomes (dPROs) and their measures (dPROMs) in evidence-based dentistry, particularly focusing on OHRQoL assessment for adults. The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) is the most commonly used and methodologically best investigated instrument for capturing OHRQoL, with the 5-item version being the most patient-friendly. Evaluating the resulting scores and comparing them to norms from different populations is essential in deriving valid and meaningful results.

A conceptual model of oro-facial health with an emphasis on function

Martin Schimmel et al.

Summary: The individual's inclination towards leading an independent life until death is associated with various physiological, psychosocial, and environmental requirements. The state of oro-facial health, characterized by the absence of physical and mental disease, is crucial for fulfilling the natural functions of the oro-facial system. Research is needed to develop validated tools and functional rehabilitation procedures to distinguish between states of oro-facial fitness and oral hypofunction, and to promote overall oral health maintenance and improvement.
