Imaging solid-electrolyte interphase dynamics using operando reflection interference microscopy

Guangxia Feng et al.

Summary: Reflection interference microscopy enables real-time imaging of the formation and evolution of the solid-electrolyte interphase in batteries, providing valuable insights into its structure and dynamics. The imaging reveals the stratified structure of the interphase, with an inner inorganic layer, an interfacial electrified double layer, and an outer organic-rich layer that is reversible with cycling. The thicknesses of the interphase subcomponents show an inverse correlation, indicating the influence of the inner layer on the formation of the outer layer and lithium nucleation.

Understanding the nucleation and growth of the degenerated surface structure of the layered transition metal oxide cathodes for lithium-ion batteries by operando Raman spectroscopy

Taehoon Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, the surface degradation mechanism of the layered LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 cathode was examined using an operando Raman cell. It was found that the degradation process involves nucleation of degenerated layers and growth/merging between the degenerated layers during charge and discharge, providing key information on how the reconstructed surface can expand during cycling.

Operando X-ray Studies of Ni-Containing Heteropolyvanadate Electrode for High-Energy Lithium-Ion Storage Applications

Tsung-Yi Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, Ni-containing heteropolyvanadate, Na6[NiV14O40], was successfully synthesized as a negative electrode material for high-energy lithium storage applications. The material can be prepared using a simple solution process that is suitable for mass production. The as-prepared electrode exhibited high capacity and excellent cycling stability, maintaining its amorphous structure with minimal volume change during cycling. Na6[NiV14O40] showed promise as a negative electrode material for Li-ion batteries and Li-ion capacitors.

3D Imaging of Lithium Protrusions in Solid-State Lithium Batteries using X-Ray Computed Tomography

Shuai Hao et al.

Summary: Solid-state lithium batteries have the potential to revolutionize lithium-ion battery and energy storage applications, but face challenges such as lithium-protrusions that can cause short-circuits. Through X-ray computed tomography, the 3D morphology of lithium protrusions inside short-circuited solid electrolytes has been obtained for the first time, shedding light on their characteristics and distribution, which is crucial for addressing short-circuit issues in solid-state lithium batteries.

Electrochemical Impedance Imaging on Conductive Surfaces

Yaping Shi et al.

Summary: RIM is a tool that can image and quantify localized impedance on conductive surfaces based on the sensitive dependence between material optical properties and local surface charge densities. Experimental results show that reflectivity modulations are linearly proportional to surface charge density on electrodes, and the measurements agree well with the simple free electron gas model.

Fast Li Plating Behavior Probed by X-ray Computed Tomography

Hongyi Pan et al.

Summary: The microscopic structure of deposited lithium has a significant impact on subsequent lithium plating, and structural inhomogeneity exacerbated by large-current charging may lead to severely uneven lithium plating, eventually resulting in cell failure. Therefore, a co-design strategy involving delicate control of microstructure and electrochemical conditions is essential for the next-generation battery with a lithium metal anode.
