Himanshu Kesarwani et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the use of fatty acid methyl sulfonated products derived from Flaxseed oil for enhanced oil recovery. Characterization tests showed that the Flaxseed surfactant had a low critical micelle concentration, reduced interfacial tension, and exhibited desirable rheological properties. Sand pack flooding tests demonstrated that the use of Flaxseed surfactant significantly increased the oil recovery rate.

Wettability Alteration of Carbonate Rock by Chelating Agents and Viscoelastic Surfactants: Synergetic Impact

Xiao Deng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the synergetic impact of chelating agents and viscoelastic surfactants on the wettability alteration of carbonate rock using contact angle measurement. The results showed that all tested chelating agents exhibited strong wettability alteration performance in deionized water solution. The combination of viscoelastic surfactant and chelating agents demonstrated moderate to strong wettability alteration performance. The optimum formulation of the two changed the wettability from strongly oil-wet to water-wet.

Synergistic Effects of Weak Alkaline-Surfactant-Polymer and SiO2 Nanoparticles Flooding on Enhanced Heavy Oil Recovery

Wuchao Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new method for enhanced oil recovery by combining weak alkaline ASP flooding and nanotechnology. The experimental results demonstrate that the ASP + SiO2 nanoparticles mixture has superior performance in reducing interfacial tension and improving profile control and displacement efficiency compared to the HPAM/ASP-only solution. This new method can enhance oil recovery, reduce chemical agent cost, and avoid formation erosion and alkali deposition.

Evaluation of Silicon Carbide Nanoparticles as an Additive to Minimize Surfactant Loss during Chemical Flooding

Anurag Pandey et al.

Summary: Surfactant flooding is an effective method for enhanced oil recovery, but the loss of surfactant due to adsorption and the critical micelle concentration pose challenges. This study demonstrates that the use of Silicon Carbide nanoparticles as additives can reduce surfactant adsorption by 44% and the critical micelle concentration by 14%. The concentration of nanoparticles required is significantly lower than previous literature on other nanoparticles.

Comparative effect of zirconium oxide (ZrO2) and silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanoparticles on the adsorption properties of surfactant-rock system: Equilibrium and thermodynamic analysis

Nurudeen Yekeen et al.

Summary: This research investigated the impact of ZrO2 nanoparticles on the static adsorption of Triton X-100 and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate onto an adsorbent surface with positive and negative charges. The study found that ZrO2 nanoparticles are more effective at reducing surfactant adsorption compared to SiO2 nanoparticles, especially at higher temperatures. The results suggest that ZrO2 nanoparticles have promise in minimizing surfactant adsorption onto rock surfaces due to electrostatic repulsion and higher competition for surfactant molecules.

Anionic/Nonionic Surfactant Mixture for Enhanced Oil Recovery through the Investigation of Adsorption, Interfacial, Rheological, and Rock Wetting Characteristics

Himanshu Kesarwani et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the effects of a binary surfactant mixture on various aspects of surfactant polymer flooding, including the critical micelle concentration, adsorption behavior, interfacial properties, and wetting characteristics. By comparing initial and final concentrations of the surfactant mixture, it was found that the binary surfactant mixture outperforms individual surfactants and efficiently reduces surfactant adsorption by 63%. Additionally, the binary surfactant mixture achieved an ultralow interfacial tension value of 0.0097 mN/m and was able to recover up to 76% of the total oil in sand pack flooding experiments.

Effects of Various Nanoparticles on the Rheological Properties of Carboxylic Cellulose Nanofibers and the Compound System's Application in Enhanced Oil Recovery

Jie Yuan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of three typical NPs on CCNF solutions, with AlOOH NPs showing a positive impact on the rheological properties of CCNF due to electrostatic attraction. The intensified network of the CCNF/AlOOH system resulted in superior emulsifying performance and temperature and salt tolerance compared to other systems. In core flooding tests, the CCNF/AlOOH system outperformed individual CCNF and conventional hydrolyzed polyacrylamide, suggesting the potential of incorporating AlOOH NPs to enhance CCNF's practical application in EOR.

Oil Mobilization Potential of a Novel Anionic Karanj Oil Surfactant: Interfacial, Wetting Characteristic, Adsorption, and Oil Recovery Studies

Himanshu Kesarwani et al.

Summary: A novel biodegradable surfactant was developed from Karanj oil, which showed promising potential in enhancing oil recovery efficiency through thermal stability and reducing interfacial tension. The surfactant effectively altered the wetting behavior of the sand surface and exhibited lower adsorption compared to conventional anionic surfactants. Sand pack flooding tests indicated that using the ASP slug designed with Karanj oil surfactant led to the additional recovery of approximately 32% of crude oil after water flooding.
