Synthesis and in vitro antifungal activity of selenium-containing chitin derivatives

Anton R. Egorov et al.

Summary: The mild and 'green' ultrasound-assisted reaction of chitin with 3-(chloromethyl) [1 ,2,4] selenadiazolo [4,5-a]pyridin-4-ium bromide in water results in novel selenium-containing cationic chitin derivatives. These water-soluble derivatives exhibit high in vitro antifungal activity similar to the conventional antifungal drug Amphotericin B.

Seleno Containing Compounds as Potent and Selective Antifungal Agents

Andrea Angeli et al.

Summary: Fungal promoted infections due to drug-resistant phenomena and zoonosis have become a severe global health emergency. This study investigated a novel class of antifungal agents that act through selenium toxicity and inhibition of the therapeutic target, Carbonic Anhydrases. These compounds showed significant antifungal activity and selectivity, making them potential candidates for the development of new antifungal drugs with low cytotoxicity.

Antimicrobial screening of a historical collection of over 140000 small molecules

Victor V. Semenov et al.

Summary: A chemical compound collection assembled at the N.D. Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry over the past 30 years has been screened for antimicrobial activity against ESKAPE pathogens and fungi at the University of Queensland. A total of 2517 active molecules were found, with about 10% being active at very low concentrations. The structures and experimental data of these compounds are publicly available through the CheD software demo version and the Community for Open Antimicrobial Drug Discovery public database.

Antifungal Pipeline

Todd Patrick McCarty et al.

Summary: Fungal diseases have been overlooked or neglected, with anti-bacterial agents receiving more attention in recent decades. However, there is now a growing focus on developing new antifungal medications to combat rising resistance and emerging organisms. It is hoped that in the future, more novel antifungal agents will come to market to assist physicians in treating various fungal infections.
