Asymmetric Low-Frequency Pulsed Strategy Enables Ultralong CO2 Reduction Stability and Controllable Product Selectivity

Xiang-Da Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple and efficient asymmetric low-frequency pulsed strategy (ALPS) was proposed to enhance the stability and selectivity of the Cu-dimethylpyrazole complex Cu3(DMPz)3 catalyst in electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2RR). The ALPS method achieved high selectivities for CH4 and C2H4, as well as ultralong stability. Microscopy and spectroscopy measurements revealed the formation of highly dispersed and active Cu-based clusters with modulated Cu oxidation states under the ALPS methods.

Dynamically Formed Surfactant Assembly at the Electrified Electrode-Electrolyte Interface Boosting CO2 Electroreduction

Wangxin Ge et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of bias potential on the interfacial microenvironment and catalytic selectivity using CO2 and H2O electrochemical co-reduction on commercial electrodes with surfactant additives. The results reveal that the bias potential leads to a transformation of the surfactant structure from random distribution to ordered assembly, which regulates the water environment and promotes CO2 enrichment at the electrified interface. This hydrophobic-aerophilic interface microenvironment reduces the water dissociation activity and increases the selectivity of CO2 electroreduction to CO.

Interfacial O2 Accumulation Affects Microenvironment in Carbon-Based Electrocatalysts for H2O2 Production

Chaowei Yang et al.

Summary: This study reveals that by simply altering the O-2 diffusion kinetics in a carbonaceous gas diffusion electrode, efficient H2O2 production can be achieved. By increasing the oxygen-accumulation interface to improve the utilization efficiency of active sites and stabilizing intermediates to inhibit the protonation process, high selectivity of H2O2 production is enabled.

Preparation of highly (111) textured nanotwinned copper by me dium-frequency pulse d electrodeposition in an additive-free electrolyte

Xiaofei Zhan et al.

Summary: A simple and novel strategy for fabricating highly (111) textured nanotwinned copper (nt-Cu) by using medium-frequency (10-1000 Hz) pulsed electrodeposition in an ultra-low Cu2+ concentration electrolyte without additives was reported. The research deepened the understanding of the formation of nanotwin structures in copper electrodeposits and broadened the application of this process in the industry. The mechanical properties and thermal stability of the as-deposited Cu were also studied, showing similar results to those prepared using existing methods.

Summary: In this study, a postengineering method was developed to accurately dope carboxyl groups in a carbon framework, leading to improved Na+ storage properties. Experimental and theoretical analysis showed that the carboxyl groups act as active sites for Na+ adsorption and facilitate diffusion-controlled Na+ insertion, providing new insights for enhancing reversible Na+ storage in carbon materials.

Cation-Dependent Interfacial Structures and Kinetics for Outer-Sphere Electron-Transfer Reactions

Botao Huang et al.

Summary: This study shows that the identity of spectator cation species can influence the solvation properties and ET kinetics of the redox species, with a trend of increasing solvent reorganization energy as cationic radius decreases. The presence of less charge density cations such as Cs+ can promote weaker hydrogen bonds and lower the effective interfacial static dielectric constant in the redox solvation shell, impacting reaction thermodynamics and rates in electrochemical processes.

Selectivity Control of Cu Nanocrystals in a Gas-Fed Flow Cell through CO2 Pulsed Electroreduction

Hyo Sang Jeon et al.

Summary: This study utilized a pulsed CO2 electroreduction reaction approach to adjust product distribution in a gas-fed flow cell for industrially relevant current densities. By comparing the selectivity of Cu catalysts under potentiostatic and pulsed electrolysis conditions, it was found that the enhanced product selectivity in the latter case can be attributed to structural modifications and local pH effects. The differences in catalyst selectivity were observed to influence the formation of specific products, such as C-2 and CH4, through morphological reconstruction and consumption of OH - species near the catalyst surface.

Enhancing oxygen reduction electrocatalysis by tuning interfacial hydrogen bonds

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: The proton activity at the electrified interface plays a crucial role in the kinetics of proton-coupled electron transfer reactions. By using a library of protic ionic liquids on platinum and gold interfaces, researchers have successfully enhanced the oxygen reduction reaction activity by up to fivefold, showing a volcano-shaped dependence on the pK(a) of the ionic liquid. This enhancement is attributed to strengthened hydrogen bonds between ORR products and ionic liquids with similar pK(a)s, leading to favorable PCET kinetics.
