Manning condensation in ion exchange membranes: A review on ion partitioning and diffusion models

David Kitto et al.

Summary: The rational design of ion exchange membranes (IEMs) is crucial as their usage expands and their staple applications improve. This review discusses recent progress in modeling ion partitioning and diffusion in IEMs, aiming to relate IEM performance to fundamental membrane properties. The Donnan-Manning and Manning-Meares models are highlighted as leading predictors of IEM partitioning and diffusive properties.

Toward a Comprehensive Understanding of Cation Effects in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

ChungHyuk Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of cation contamination on fuel cell performance were comprehensively understood through controlled doping of electrodes. The research identified that around 44% of Co2+ exchange in the ionomer can be tolerated in the electrode, with performance losses mainly induced by oxygen and proton transport losses. It was also found that Co2+ preferentially resides in the electrode under wet operating conditions, providing insights for strategies to mitigate undesired effects when using alloy catalysts.

Thermodynamic factors for locally non-neutral, concentrated electrolytic fluids

Priyamvada Goyal et al.

Summary: A constitutive framework is established to parameterize the composition-dependent parts of thermodynamic differentials underlying diffusion driving forces in non-neutral electrolytic fluids. This framework incorporates core potentials and new electrostatic colligative properties, with matrix representations for interconversion among different potentials. The research provides consistent thermodynamic parameterizations for various types of electrolytes and develops constitutive equations for species electrochemical-potential differentials within chemically nonideal solutions.

Aqueous ion partitioning in Nafion: Applicability of Manning's counter-ion condensation theory

Rahul Sujanani et al.

Summary: Nafion, a well-studied polymer with rapid proton transport, was compared in terms of ion activity coefficients and solubility in various aqueous solutions. The study found that the ion pairing effect significantly affects the solubility of Na2SO4 in Nafion. While the counter-ion condensation theory shows general applicability to highly charged polymers, it also reveals fundamental limitations related to ion pairing effects.

Increased Donnan exclusion in charged polymer networks at high salt concentrations

Kevin W. Gao et al.

Summary: The swelling of charged polymeric networks in electrolytic solutions was studied using a classical thermodynamic model. The well-established theory of Donnan exclusion was examined, which predicts that with increasing electrolyte concentration, the exclusion of electrolytes from the gel would decrease. However, the model predicts that the magnitude of Donnan exclusion actually increases with increasing electrolyte concentration in a broad range of parameter space.

Membrane Materials for Selective Ion Separations at the Water-Energy Nexus

Ryan M. DuChanois et al.

Summary: This article evaluates the ion selectivity of conventional polymeric membrane materials and describes recent progress in enhancing selective transport through tailored free volume elements and ion-membrane interactions. To overcome the limitations of polymeric membranes, three material classes - porous crystalline materials, 2D materials, and discrete biomimetic channels - are highlighted as possible candidates for ion-selective membranes due to their molecular-level control over physical and chemical properties. Finally, research directions and critical challenges for developing bioinspired membranes with molecular recognition are provided.
