Industrial restructuring, energy consumption and economic growth: Evidence from China

Xin-gang Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper explores the equilibrium relationship and Granger causality among industrial restructuring, energy consumption, and economic growth at aggregated and disaggregated levels. The findings demonstrate that industrial structure rationalization has a higher impact on economic growth compared to industrial structure upgrading, while natural gas and renewable energy consumption have a smaller effect on economic growth. Therefore, it is important to focus on industrial structure rationalization and develop policies that encourage clean energy development.

Do geologic hazards affect the sustainability of rural development? Evidence from rural areas in China

Lu Gan et al.

Summary: Geological hazards have spatially heterogeneous impacts on rural development, depending on the socioeconomic development rather than risk magnitude. Assessing the sustainability of rural development requires complete identification and classification of area types. Geological hazards seriously affect the sustainability of rural areas with less developed transportation and remote terrain.

Environmental profile of the municipality of Madrid through the methodologies of Urban Metabolism and Life Cycle Analysis

Sara Gonzalez-Garcia et al.

Summary: This study conducted a material flow accounting and Life Cycle Assessment for the city of Madrid, Spain, in order to diagnose its sustainability issues. The environmental hotspots identified in the city include energy needs, food consumption, and manufacturing. However, important constraints arise during the comprehensive analysis of data, mainly related to data access.

Evaluation on urban environmental sustainability and coupling coordination among its dimensions: A case study of Shandong Province, China

Danning Zhang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates urban environmental sustainability and the coupling coordination degree among its dimensions in cities of Shandong Province in China. Results show that while urban environmental sustainability generally performed poorly due to lagging socioeconomic development, most cities showed developmental momentum under strict environmental regulations. However, the coordinated development of subsystems still needs improvement.

Assessing the dynamics of sustainability for social-ecological systems based on the adaptive cycle framework: A case study in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration

Ling Zhang et al.

Summary: By utilizing the adaptive cycle framework and catastrophe theory, a method was developed to assess the sustainability dynamics of social-ecological systems (SESs) in order to ensure human well-being and achieve sustainable development goals. Applied to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration (BTHUA), the results indicated an overall improvement in sustainability from 2000 to 2017, with identified release phases in 2006 and 2012 leading to a decrease in sustainability.
