Investigating the hydropower plants production and profitability using system dynamics approach

Sareh Daneshgar et al.

Summary: As the electricity industry worldwide seeks ways to improve production, distribution, and transmission, hydropower has gained attention for its ability to convert directly into electricity and its potential for storage. However, uncertainties such as market prices and water inflow into dams have made decision-making for hydropower producers more complex. This research develops a dynamic production profitability model to simulate the operation of a hydro reservoir system and the profitability process for producers, using the Karun 1 Dam as a case study. The results show the most profitable scenario to be discharging 15% of the dam in the 24th month.

Life cycle assessment of a short-rotation coppice willow riparian buffer strip for farm nutrient mitigation and renewable energy production

David Livingstone et al.

Summary: With increasing agricultural activity in Europe, concern over water quality is growing. Agricultural run-off is a major contributor to freshwater degradation. Using willow coppice as a riparian buffer has been suggested as a solution to mitigate these problems. However, there is limited research on its effectiveness and several key knowledge gaps exist. This study aims to fill these gaps and inform agri-environmental policy.

An integrated simulation-optimization modelling approach for sustainability assessment of electricity generation system

Mohammad Saeid Atabaki et al.

Summary: This paper aims to develop an integrated simulation-optimization decision support system for electricity generation planning. The results show that the broader deployment of wind turbine primarily, solar thermal subsequently, is the major source of difference in the sustainable expansion compared to business as usual (BAU). However, the findings indicate that even the extensive utilization of renewable energy sources cannot guarantee sustainability improvement all through the planning period. Supply-side plans should be appropriately supported by demand-side strategies.

Energy, water, and environmental impacts assessment of electricity generation in Iran

Seyed Mohsen Hosseini et al.

Summary: This study adopts a hybrid life cycle assessment method to evaluate the energy, water, and environmental impacts of high-voltage electricity generation in Iran. The findings indicate that natural gas-fired power plants contribute the most to the life-cycle impacts of electricity generation, while wind and hydropower plants have minimal contributions. The study suggests that ensuring an adequate supply of natural gas during cold seasons can partially reduce water and environmental impacts, but increasing the share of renewable energy can significantly reduce the overall impacts.

A review of how life cycle assessment has been used to assess the environmental impacts of hydropower energy

Eskinder Gemechu et al.

Summary: Hydropower is an important renewable energy source, but there is controversy over whether it is carbon-neutral like solar and wind power. Research shows that the characteristics of hydropower projects can lead to significant greenhouse gas emissions. This paper reviews the inconsistencies in using life cycle assessment for hydropower projects, particularly in accurately estimating and modeling reservoir greenhouse gas emissions.

Life cycle assessment and life cycle cost analysis of a 40 MW wind farm with consideration of the infrastructure

Qiangfeng Li et al.

Summary: Wind power, especially onshore wind farms, has been widely used globally. A study conducted on a newly built 40MW wind farm in China with consideration of infrastructure showed that the greenhouse gas emissions intensity was slightly higher compared to nuclear and hydropower, almost comparable to photovoltaic power, yet significantly lower than thermal power and biomass power. Life cycle cost analysis indicated that the levelized cost of electricity from wind power was relatively low at around 0.01-0.02 USD/kWh.

Summary: This study evaluated the environmental impacts of using sugarcane and agave bagasse from Mexico as raw materials for bioenergy. It was found that sugarcane cultivation has 2 to 6 times more impact than agave cultivation in almost all impact categories. The best scenario in terms of environmental impact was the combustion of agave bagasse among the four scenarios compared.

F. A. Felder et al.

Summary: Energy systems models, particularly deep decarbonization models (DDM), are used to analyze long-term policies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. An epistemological review of DDM literature over the past decade highlights the need for further studies on the potential strengths, usefulness, and limitations of these models. Proceeding with caution and striving for better models is crucial in utilizing DDMs to identify pathways for deep decarbonization of future energy systems and drawing policy conclusions.

Environment-related stranded assets: An agenda for research into value destruction within carbon-intensive sectors in response to environmental concerns

Summary: Research on stranded assets is narrow in scope, with sectoral and geographical imbalances evident. It is mostly discussed in grey literature with little connection to its implications for climate-sensitive sectors. The focus is on the scale of the problem and cumulative amount of assets that may become stranded in the long term, while there is a potential disconnect between value destruction and creation aspects during the transition to a low-carbon economy.
