Performance of a Belled Pile Influenced by Pile Head Freedom Response to a Cooling-Heating Cycle

Yang Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of pile head freedom on the thermomechanical performance of a belled pile through field tests. The test results show that the degree of freedom near the pile head decreases with the structure mass. The incremental superstructure reduces the pile freedom, and the constraint effect decreases along the pile depth. Compared with the equal-diameter pile, the belled pile exhibits significant constraint effects near the toe, which can reduce the cracking risk under cooling conditions.

Analytical solution for horizontal vibration of end-bearing single pile in radially heterogeneous saturated soil

Chunyi Cui et al.

Summary: An analytical model for the horizontal vibration of a single pile embedded in radially heterogeneous saturated soil is established using Biot's dynamic equations and Novak's thin-layer theory. The frequency-domain response of the surrounding soil and the analytical solution for the horizontal impedance of pile head are derived. The accuracy of the obtained solution is validated through independent comparisons, and the effect of soil radial heterogeneity on the horizontal vibration of an end bearing pile is discussed through extensive parametric analysis.

Effects of pile and soil properties on thermally induced mechanical responses of energy piles

Gangqiang Kong et al.

Summary: Energy piles, which exploit geothermal energy and provide structural stability, have garnered global interest. This paper explores the influence of pile and soil properties on the thermally induced mechanical behavior of energy piles. Through in-situ experiments and three-dimensional numerical models, the behavior of energy piles with different U-pipe configurations was evaluated in terms of energy efficiency and structural safety. The findings highlight the importance of considering the mechanical effects of increasing pipe length in the design, as well as the time-variable effects of soil thermal expansion and elastic modulus on the thermomechanical response of energy piles.

A data-driven interval forecasting model for building energy prediction using attention-based LSTM and fuzzy information granulation

Yue Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a deep-learning-based interval forecasting model is developed for predicting building energy consumption, which combines fuzzy information granulation and attention mechanism to present future uncertainties. The research shows that the granulation window size is a key parameter determining the quality of prediction intervals, and the attention-based LSTM outperforms conventional LSTM in interval forecasting performance.

Global sensitivity based prioritizing the parametric uncertainties in economic analysis when co-locating photovoltaic with agriculture and aquaculture in China

Rui Jing et al.

Summary: Teaming up photovoltaic (PV) with agriculture or aquaculture can create a novel energy-food-(land or water) nexus that offers mutual benefits. An economic analysis framework is proposed to benchmark the profitability of agrivoltaics and aquavoltaics systems and prioritize the influencing factors for the project economy. The framework is applied in China, indicating the average simple payback period ranges between 6.2-6.6 years for agrivoltaics projects and 9.5-10.1 years for aquavoltaics projects. The capital cost of PV, solar resource richness, and feed-in-tariff are the top three influencing factors for profitability. The national potential for agrivoltaics and aquavoltaics in China is estimated to be up to 112 GW and 564 GW, respectively. Overall, agrivoltaics and aquavoltaics contribute more to Sustainable Development Goals compared to PV-only configurations.

Robustness of building energy optimization with uncertainties using deterministic and stochastic methods: Analysis of two forms

Shuai Lu et al.

Summary: Building performance optimization is effective but may lack robustness with uncertainties in input parameters. Stochastic optimization shows promise in handling this issue, but its impact on improving robustness is uncertain. Reducing uncertainty in input parameters and aligning assumed distribution with real distribution are more effective strategies.
