Increasing physical activity in severe asthma: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Rebecca F. McLoughlin et al.

Summary: Physical inactivity is common in severe asthma and is associated with poor clinical outcomes. This systematic review and meta-analysis found that interventions such as aerobic and resistance training and pedometer-based interventions can effectively increase physical activity in adults with severe asthma, leading to improved asthma control and health-related quality of life.

Effect of high-intensity interval training in adolescents with asthma: The eXercise for Asthma with Commando Joe's® (X4ACJ) trial

Charles O. N. Winn et al.

Summary: This study found that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is an effective tool for improving aerobic fitness and maintaining body mass index (BMI) in adolescents, regardless of asthma status. Adolescents with asthma did not differ from their peers in aerobic fitness but had a higher BMI. The intervention group showed significant improvement in maximal aerobic fitness, but no changes in submaximal aerobic fitness, lung function, or quality of life.

A systematic review and meta-analysis on the effectiveness of swimming on lung function and asthma control in children with asthma

Hadassah Joann Ramachandran et al.

Summary: The study found that swimming has positive effects on lung function and asthma control in children under 18 years old, but the potential adverse effects on asthma remain unclear. Future research should be adequately powered and consider cumulative exposures to chlorine by-products and other potential confounders.

A Systematic Review of the Effect of Physical Activity on Asthma Outcomes

Margaret M. Kuder et al.

Summary: Research on the effects of physical activity on asthma outcomes demonstrates mixed results, with most studies suggesting improvement in asthma control, quality of life, and lung function parameters. However, some studies found no significant improvements in these outcomes. Further high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to address the measurement heterogeneity and dilution of outcome effect size related to physical activity interventions for asthma.

Asthma and Physical Activity in Urban Children

Daphne Koinis-Mitchell et al.

Summary: Asthma and obesity disproportionately affect urban minority children. The study found that poorer asthma status was associated with lower MVPA in Latino and Black participants, as well as in normal weight youth. Body mass index (BMI) moderated the association between asthma and MVPA, with lower BMI associated with more optimal asthma status and higher MVPA levels.
