Synthesis and thermophysical properties of ATa2O6 (A = Co, Ni, Mg, Ca) tantalates with robust CMAS resistance

Baihui Li et al.

Summary: A new family of ceramic E/TBC materials, ATa(2)O(6) (A = Co, Ni, Mg, Ca), with remarkable phase stability and matching thermal expansion coefficients, as well as low thermal conductivities, have been investigated. They exhibit good comparability with current E/TBCs in terms of hardness, toughness, and moduli. Moreover, they provide exceptional thermal insulation and CMAS corrosion protection due to their excellent high-temperature properties.

Effect of CMAS viscosity on the infiltration depth in thermal barrier coatings of different microstructures

Rishi Kumar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of CMAS viscosity and coating microstructure on the infiltration depth of CMAS. The results show that low viscosity CMAS can penetrate the coating more easily, and the microstructure of the coating also affects the infiltration depth of CMAS.

Reactive crystallization in HfO2 exposed to molten silicates

Collin S. Holgate et al.

Summary: This article investigates the response of Hafnia to molten silicate attack in thermal and environmental barrier coatings. It compares the response with pure ZrO2 and examines the effect of YO1.5 additions. The study found that HfO2 reacts differently with acidic and basic melts, and Y additions can exacerbate grain boundary penetration, especially in the presence of a second phase like fluorite.

Effect of Er dopant on the corrosion resistance of YSZ in CMAS melt: experimental and first-principles study

Yan Mo et al.

Summary: The study found that the penetration depth of YSZ doped with Er element is smaller than that of undoped YSZ, and theoretical results show that Er doping can weaken the thermal stress and adhesive strength of the material. Additionally, Er doping can also influence the diffusion properties of YSZ, potentially slowing down phase transitions and promoting the formation of corrosion products.

ZrO2-doped YTaO4 as potential CMAS-resistant materials for thermal barrier coatings application

Di Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, ZrO2-doped YTaO4 materials were investigated for their CMAS resistance, showing better performance compared to classical Gd2Zr2O7. The mechanism behind the improved resistance was attributed to the rapid formation and thickening of a dense reaction product layer facilitated by ZrO2 doping. It was also found that while minor ZrO2 doping enhances CMAS resistance, heavy doping can degrade long-term resistance.
