Design of Amphiphilic, Biodegradable Functionalized Polyoxazoline Hybrid-Block Graft Copolymers Using Click Reactions

Gia Storti et al.

Summary: Hybrid molecular brushes (HMBs) are polymeric constructs with a linear polymeric backbone and polymeric side chains, while hybrid-block graft copolymers (HCPs) have a backbone consisting of more than one polymer. In this study, we developed a facile method for synthesizing amphiphilic, biodegradable HCPs composed of a hydrophilic block of poly(ethylene glycol) and a hydrophobic block of poly(2-oxazolines) modified by side chains of polycaprolactone. We determined the critical micelle concentration, investigated the uptake and partitioning of beta-carotene in the micelles, and studied the brush architecture of the HCPs.

Poly-2-methyl-2-oxazoline-modified bioprosthetic heart valve leaflets have enhanced biocompatibility and resist structural degeneration

Andrey Zakharchenko et al.

Summary: This study shows that poly-2-methyl-2-oxazoline (POZ) modification of bovine pericardium reduces the accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGE) and serum proteins in bioprosthetic heart valves (BHV), mitigating structural valve degeneration (SVD). POZ-modified BHV demonstrated reduced accumulation of serum albumin and AGE and maintained collagen microarchitecture. Ethanol pretreatment inhibited both AGE and calcification accumulation. This research suggests that POZ functionalization enhances biocompatibility and ethanol pretreatment can prevent calcification in BHV.

Polyoxazoline: A review article from polymerization to smart behaviors and biomedical applications

Saba Nemati Mahand et al.

Summary: Poly(2-oxazoline)s are innovative biomaterials with analogous or better properties compared to known counterparts. They can be synthesized in a controlled manner using cationic ring-opening polymerization and have water solubility, amphiphilicity, and relative non-toxicity, making them attractive for biomedical applications. This review highlights the synthesis, structure, and properties of polyoxazolines, as well as their potential use in tissue engineering.

Cell-Mediated Immunoreactivity of Poly(2-isopropenyl-2-oxazoline) as Promising Formulation for Immunomodulation

Ema Paulovicova et al.

Summary: Poly(2-isopropenyl-2-oxazoline) (PIPOx) is a functional polymer with high potential for drug delivery, tissue engineering, and immunomodulation. In vitro studies have shown the immunomodulatory efficiency of PIPOx formulation on various immune cell responses, including the production of specific cytokines and cell phagocytosis. The results demonstrate the bioavailability of PIPOx and its capability to induce immune cell responses, highlighting its potential for future biomedical applications.
