Surface and Tribological Properties of Powder Metallurgical Cp-Ti Titanium Alloy Modified by Shot Peening

Yasemin Yildiran Avcu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dry sliding wear behavior of a powder metallurgical pure titanium alloy modified by shot peening. The results show that shot peening can decrease the wear rate of the alloy by about 20% compared to unpeened surfaces. The shot-peened and unpeened surfaces exhibit micro-ploughing, micro-cutting, oxidation, and three-body abrasion wear mechanisms.

Gradient Coating of Laser Cladding TiB2/Ti-Based Alloy on Titanium Alloy Surface

Yinghua Lin et al.

Summary: The study prepared a 30% TiB2/Ti-based alloy gradient coating on the surface of titanium alloy using laser cladding technology to address the insufficient wear resistance of cup-shaped parts made of titanium alloy materials. The microstructure of the cladding layer showed rod-like and coarse-grained features on the surface, while inside it exhibited fine needle-like and small-grained morphologies. The cladding layer demonstrated better fretting wear resistance than the titanium alloy substrate under low loads, but a reverse outcome was observed under high loads.

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Ti-TiH2 Based Matrix Composites Reinforced with xTiB2 Particles Processed by Powder Metallurgy

David Israel Bravo Barcenas et al.

Summary: The study investigated the changes in structure, microstructure evolution, and mechanical properties of Ti-TiH2 matrix reinforced with TiB2 particles during Powder Metallurgy (PM) through High Vacuum Sintering. Composites were fabricated at different temperatures and the use of TiH2 reduced the consumption of CP-Ti. X-Ray Diffraction, Optical Microscopy, and Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy were used to analyze the structure and microstructure. Vickers microhardness and nanoindentation were performed to evaluate the mechanical properties. The results showed that reinforced samples with 30 vol.% of TiB2, sintered at 1300 degrees C, exhibited the highest mechanical properties, making them more suitable than CP-Ti for potential biomedical applications.

The Effect of High-Velocity Air-Fuel WC-12Co Coatings on the Wear and Corrosion Resistance of TC18 Titanium Alloy

Haisheng Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the wear and corrosion mechanisms of TC18 titanium alloy used in aircraft landing gear. A WC-12Co coating was prepared on a TC18 substrate using the HVAF spraying technique, and the microscopic characterization of the materials was analyzed. Computational fluid dynamics and orthogonal experiments were used to evaluate the effect of spraying parameters on the flight temperature and velocity of spraying particles. The optimized process parameters significantly improved the hardness and corrosion resistance of the TC18 titanium alloy.

Synthesis and Characterization of Ti-Ta-Shape Memory Surface Alloys Formed by the Electron-Beam Additive Technique

Maria Ormanova et al.

Summary: The electron-beam cycling additive technique was used to form shape memory Ti-Ta coatings on a titanium substrate. After multiple cycles, the coatings had a thickness of around 50 μm and an increased Ta content. The coatings exhibited a double-phase structure of α' martensite and β phases, with the highest amount of β phase observed in the coating obtained after the third cycle. The Young's modulus and hardness decreased with each cycle, while the elastic depth recovery ratio increased.

Study on Nanoscale Friction Behavior of TiC/Ni Composites by Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Min Zheng et al.

Summary: The friction and wear behavior of TiC/Ni composites were systematically investigated using the molecular dynamics method. The position of the grinding ball relative to the TiC phase affects the frictional force, abrasion depth, and wear rate. The presence of TiC phase hinders defect development and improves wear resistance. The motion of the carbonized phase affects the deformation behavior of the entire workpiece.

Stefan Valkov et al.

Summary: The study presents the results of Young's modulus and coefficient of friction of Ti-Ta surface alloys formed by electron-beam surface alloying. As the beam power increases, a thicker alloyed zone is formed, resulting in a decrease in Young's modulus and a decrease in coefficient of friction. The structure of the obtained surface alloys is in the form of double-phase alpha'and beta.

Microstructure, Microhardness, Fracture Toughness, and Abrasive Wear of In-Situ Synthesized TiC/Ti-Al Composite Coatings by Cold Spraying Combined with Heat Treatment

Xiao Chen et al.

Summary: TiAl intermetallic compounds are a new type of high-performance lightweight structural material that is widely used in various fields. The addition of titanium carbide (TiC) as a reinforcing phase can enhance the mechanical properties, wear resistance, and heat-resistance stability of TiAl intermetallic compounds. The research revealed that the particle size of the mixture powders decreased with longer ball milling time, and Ti(Al) solid solution appeared as the milling time increased to 30 hours. The coatings sprayed at 550 degrees C exhibited the lowest average porosity and the same phase compositions as the mixture powders.
