Laboratory Evaluation of the Relationship of Asphalt Binder and Asphalt Mastic via a Modified MSCR Test

Binshuo Bao et al.

Summary: Asphalt mastic, composed of an asphalt binder and mineral filler, plays a crucial role in providing adhesion and viscoelasticity to asphalt mixtures. A laboratory test method was proposed to examine the correlation between asphalt binder and mastic. Two modified binders blended with limestone filler at different contents were subjected to a modified multiple stress creep-recovery (MSCR) test. The test revealed that the stress of asphalt binder decreased with increasing filler content, and the rheological properties of asphalt binder in the mastic were improved by adding filler.

Laboratory and Full-Scale Testbed Study in the Feasibility of Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene Asphalt Pavement Having Epoxy Resin and Crumb Rubber Powder

Sang-Yum Lee et al.

Summary: Conventional asphalt concrete pavements have deteriorated rapidly due to increased traffic and extreme climate impacts. This research aims to improve road capacity and traffic safety by using modified asphalt binders. By adding epoxy resin (ER) and crumb rubber powder (CRP), the performance and stress-bearing capacity of the modified mixtures were evaluated through laboratory tests and field experiments, showing promising results for sustainable development.

Asphalt Binder Modification with Plastomeric Compounds Containing Recycled Plastics and Graphene

Simone D'Angelo et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental investigation on the performance of bitumen blends added with two plastomeric compounds, showing better rutting resistance at high temperatures compared to plain bitumen. Comparable bond strength results were found between the blends and reference bitumen, with no performance differences detected between the two types of blends.

A novel epoxy-terminated polyethylene modified asphalt with low-viscosity and high storage stability

Mengru Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a strategy to reduce the molecular weight of polyethylene (PE) while adding functionalized end group to it. By applying this method, low molecular weight epoxy-terminated polyethylene (EPE) modified asphalt is obtained, which exhibits storage stability, reduces the mixing and compaction temperatures of asphalt, and reduces environmental pollution. Additionally, EPE improves the rheological properties of asphalt.

Obtaining of Formaldehyde Modified Tars and Road Materials on Their Basis

Katarzyna Pstrowska et al.

Summary: The process of chemical modification of tar and oxidized bitumen with formalin was investigated. Tar was found to be the most effective raw material for the process, while solvents were found to be necessary for the modification of oxidized bitumens. Sulfuric acid was identified as the most active catalyst in the process.

Rheological Behaviour of WMA-Modified Asphalt Binders with Crumb Rubber

Emilio Turbay et al.

Summary: This research investigates the effects of crumb rubber and warm mix asphalt additives on asphalt binder modification. The results show that crumb rubber increases the stiffness of the asphalt binder and improves its rutting resistance but decreases fatigue performance. On the other hand, warm mix technology decreases the stiffness and performance of the asphalt at high temperatures.

Investigating the High- and Low-Temperature Performance of Warm Crumb Rubber-Modified Bituminous Binders Using Rheological Tests

Haopeng Wang et al.

Summary: Rubberized asphalt materials are combined with warm-mix technologies to address energy consumption and emissions issues during construction. This study quantifies the effects of rubber content and warm-mix additives on the performance of crumb rubber-modified bitumen, showing that higher rubber concentrations improve high- and low-temperature performance, while the effects of warm-mix additives vary. The modification mechanisms involving bitumen stiffening and swollen rubber particles contribute to the superior rutting and thermal cracking resistance of the material.

Fabrication of urea formaldehyde-epoxy resin microcapsules for the preparation of high self-healing ability containing SBS modified asphalt

Song Yang et al.

Summary: The study prepared UFE-styrene butadiene styrene modified asphalt, which showed higher healing rate and improved viscoelasticity, high temperature stability, and resistance to permanent deformation compared to pure SBS modified asphalt. The incorporation of UFE microcapsules into asphalt enhances its mechanical properties and thermal stability, providing a feasible alternative approach for applications in construction and highway industries.
