Understanding the Synergistic Effects and Structural Evolution of Co(OH)2 and Co3O4 toward Boosting Electrochemical Charge Storage

Peng Gao et al.

Summary: A novel Co3O4/Co(OH)(2) heterostructure was obtained via electrodeposition on nickel foam, with a sandwich-like structure and a freestanding electrode. The presence of a conductive and robust interfacial Co3O4 layer effectively minimized charge transfer resistance and stabilized the interface, improving the electrode's rate and cycling performance. Structural evolution of Co(OH)(2) and Co3O4 upon cycling was systematically elucidated, showing irreversibly changing of Co(OH)(2) to CoOOH and negligible phase changes of Co3O4, indicating good structural integrity contributing to significantly improved cyclability.

On-Chip Batteries for Dust-Sized Computers

Yang Li et al.

Summary: Advancements in microelectronics have allowed for the development of miniaturized computers with autonomous intelligence, but the issue of size mismatch between microbatteries and microelectronics poses a significant barrier. The concept of micro-origami aims to address this issue by reducing the footprint area of batteries, mimicking successful full-sized battery manufacturing processes. The Perspective also emphasizes the two basic requirements for integration into microcomputers: minimum energy density and monolithic integration with other functional circuits on the chip.

A Sub-Square-Millimeter Microbattery with Milliampere-Hour-Level Footprint Capacity

Zhe Qu et al.

Summary: As miniaturization of intelligent microsystems to sub-square-millimeter scale has progressed, there is a need for improved microbattery technologies. A micro-origami technique that creates a Swiss roll shape shows promise in providing adequate energy similar to full-sized batteries. By using a micro-origami process, an on-chip Swiss roll current collector infused with a zincophilic binder and MnO2 slurry is developed. This microbattery has a small footprint area of 0.75 mm(2) and demonstrates a high capacity of up to 3.3 mAh cm(-2). It also shows good stability for over 600 cycles at a 50% depth of discharge. Integration of this microbattery with a microsystem has also been demonstrated, paving the way for energy supply to ever-smaller intelligent microsystems.
