A study on and adsorption mechanism of ammonium nitrogen by modified corn straw biochar

Sinan Wang et al.

Summary: Using corn stover as raw material, the study investigated the adsorption mechanism of ammonium nitrogen by biochar prepared using different modification methods. The results showed that the adsorption of NH4+-N by different modified biochars followed the quasi-second-order kinetic equation and the Langmuir equation. The adsorption was found to be a spontaneous endothermic reaction. Both KOH and FeCl3 modified biochars significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity of NH4+-N, with each modification having a different mechanism.

Micro-mesoporous modified activated carbon from corn husks for removal of hexavalent chromium ions

Nabila S. Ammar et al.

Summary: Modified activated carbon sorbents were prepared from the activation of corn husks precursor to increase the chemical activity of resulting adsorbents. The presence of acidic functional groups like -OH and -COOH improved the removal efficiency of the sorbents. The ACP-Zn-Fe and ACP-Zn showed similar removal efficiency for hexavalent chromium ions, with the sorption process following a pseudo-second-order model.

Ammonium adsorption, desorption and recovery by acid and alkaline treated zeolite

Sofia Maria Muscarella et al.

Summary: In this study, the suitability of zeolite as a medium for ammonium adsorption, desorption, and recovery from wastewater was investigated. It was found that untreated and HCl-Na treated zeolite had higher adsorption efficiency, with NaCl treatments resulting in faster and more efficient NH4+ adsorption compared to CaCl2 and MgCl2 treatments.

Adsorption of emerging contaminants from water and wastewater by modified biochar: A review

Ning Cheng et al.

Summary: Emerging contaminants (ECs), relatively low-concentration but high-toxicity pollutants in the environment, have attracted widespread attention in recent years. Biochar, as a low-cost and high-efficiency adsorbent, has been used to treat ECs in water. There are numerous reports on the removal of ECs from water by modified biochar.

Ammonium removal from groundwater using peanut shell based modified biochar: Mechanism analysis and column experiments

Qiang An et al.

Summary: This study found that the modified biochar (MBC) demonstrated better adsorption capacity for ammonium compared to unmodified biochar (BC), with a maximum capacity of 6.92 mg/g. The adsorption rate was mainly controlled by monolayers chemisorption. Column experiments also confirmed the removal performance of MBC, showing its potential as an effective adsorbent for removing ammonium from groundwater.

Fe(III) modified Egeria najas driven-biochar for highly improved reduction and adsorption performance of Cr(VI)

Yan Yi et al.

Summary: The novel Egeria najas driven-biochar activated by loading ferric chloride showed efficient removal of Cr(VI) and has potential practical application in wastewater treatment. The adsorption processes of Cr(VI) were found to be spontaneous and endothermic, with mechanisms including adsorption, surface complex formation, reduction, and ion exchange reactions.
