Improvements of elevated temperature tensile strengths of Mg-Gd-Y-Zr alloy through squeeze cast

Cunlong Wang et al.

Summary: The paper reports a comparative study on the influence of environmental temperature on microstructural evolution and tensile mechanical behaviors of squeeze cast and gravity cast magnesium alloys. The results show that the ultimate tensile strength and elongation of the squeeze cast alloy are improved compared to the gravity cast alloy. The abnormal increase in strength within a certain elevated temperature range is attributed to insufficient strain hardening at lower temperatures, restricting further plastic deformation.

Effects of Nd on microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast Mg-12Gd-2Zn-xNd-0.4Zr alloys with stacking faults

Lixin Hong et al.

Summary: The effects of Nd addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-Gd-Zn-Zr alloys were studied. The addition of Nd significantly refines the grain and achieves a uniform microstructure. With increasing Nd content, the tensile yield strength and microhardness increase, while the compression yield strength decreases, resulting in a weakening of tension-compression yield asymmetry in the alloy.

Mechanical properties of Mg-Gd-Zr alloy by Nd addition combined with hot extrusion

Liu-wei Zheng et al.

Summary: The effect of Nd addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-extruded Mg-9Gd-0.5Zr alloy is investigated. Nd addition results in the disappearance of elongated non-dynamic recrystallized grains and the formation of uniformly distributed dynamic recrystallized grains. In addition, the precipitation of nano-Mg5(Gd,Nd) particles enhances the strength and ductility of the alloy.

On the solid solution substitutional position and properties of Mg-Gd alloy

Dongdong Gu et al.

Summary: The effects of gadolinium addition on crystallographic characteristics and physical properties of Mg-Gd alloy were investigated. The results show that gadolinium atoms prefer to be located on the prismatic plane. Solid solution strengthening and ductilizing effect occur in the range of 1-4 wt.% gadolinium. The alloy's ductility and crystallographic characteristics change with an increase in gadolinium content.

Fabrication of High-Strength Mg-Gd-Nd-Zn-Sn-Zr Alloy via Extrusion and Aging

Zehua Yan et al.

Summary: A high-strength Mg-based alloy bar was successfully fabricated by extrusion and two-step aging processes. The extent of extrusion was found to affect the refinement mechanisms of the alloy, with larger extents leading to finer grains and eutectic phases. Peak-aged treatment resulted in increased strength due to the presence of beta' phase and LPSO phase. Over-aging led to reduced performance as lamellar precipitates and spherical beta' phase increased in size.

Deformation behavior characterized by reticular shear bands and long chain twins in Mg-Gd-Nd(-Zn)-Zr alloys

Qian Zhang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the deformation behavior of Mg-Gd-Nd(-Zn)-Zr alloys under high temperature uniaxial compression, and reported two special nucleation mechanisms of dynamic recrystallization (DRX): Shear band dynamic recrystallization (SBDRX) and Twin dynamic recrystallization (TDRX). The addition of Zn mutates the DRX mechanism, making TDRX dominant in the alloy and inducing abnormal nucleation of a large number of {10-12} twins.
