Ciprofloxacin Release and Corrosion Behaviour of a Hybrid PEO/PCL Coating on Mg3Zn0.4Ca Alloy

Lara Moreno et al.

Summary: In this study, a hybrid hierarchical coating system consisting of plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coating and a homogeneously porous structured polycaprolactone (PCL) top-coat layer loaded with ciprofloxacin (CIP) was developed on Mg3Zn0.4Ca alloy. The HHC system achieved controlled drug release, multi-level protection, and corrosion inhibition by sealing the PEO coating pores, inhibiting corrosive species, and forming insoluble CIP-Me (Mg/Ca) chelates. CIP actively participated in the protection mechanism by interacting with cations coming through the damaged coating.

As-cast and extruded Mg -Zn -Ca systems for biodegradable implants: Characterization and corrosion behavior

Lara Moreno et al.

Summary: The present study aims to evaluate the effect of alloy processing and composition, pH control, and testing medium on the corrosion performance of Mg-Zn-Ca systems for biodegradable implants. Various microscopic methods were used to analyze the grain size and secondary phases. The corrosion performance of the alloys was evaluated using electrochemical and hydrogen evolution methods. The pH control was achieved through daily solution replacement and CO2 flow.

Development and screening of (Ca-P-Si-F)-PEO coatings for biodegradability control of Mg-Zn-Ca alloys

Lara Moreno et al.

Summary: PEO coatings were developed on MgZnxCay alloys for biomedical applications using different treatment times and a novel transparent electrolyte containing Ca, P, Si and F. The study found that Zn-rich intermetallics favor the formation of large voids in the coatings, and Ca, P, F, and Si are successfully incorporated into the coatings. The coatings consist of crystalline phases and amorphous material. Corrosion of the bare substrates can be accelerated by amino acids and organic components in the α-MEM solution, but they have no significant influence on the corrosion resistance of coated specimens. Furthermore, Zn-rich intermetallic particles in the undercoating crevice induce a more aggressive corrosive environment and enhanced micro-galvanic couple effect, leading to faster degradation of the coated alloys.

Improving the electrochemical stability of AZ31 Mg alloy in a 3.5wt.% NaCl solution via the surface functionalization of plasma electrolytic oxidation coating

Mosab Kaseem et al.

Summary: The unique interactions between HA and ALB molecules on the surface of the porous layer of AZ31 Mg alloy were utilized to fabricate a novel hybrid composite film with excellent electrochemical stability. The interaction between ALB and HA molecules can effectively reduce the exposed area to corrosive species, protecting the substrate from corrosion. The porous structure of the IL facilitates the formation of physical and chemical locking, leading to the heterogeneous nucleation and crystal growth of the organic layer.

A Review on Biomaterials for Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology: From Past to Present

Grzegorz Szczesny et al.

Summary: The principal features essential for the success of an orthopaedic implant are its shape, dimensional accuracy, and adequate mechanical properties. The clinical usefulness of biomaterials in orthopaedic and musculoskeletal trauma surgery depends on the combination of mechanical and biological properties. Materials commonly used for these applications include stainless steel, cobalt-chromium and titanium alloys, ceramics, polyethylene, and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement. This study reviews the properties of commonly used materials and discusses potential directions for future implant development, with an emphasis on developing advanced personalised implants.

Microstructural and Corrosion Properties of Hydroxyapatite Containing PEO Coating Produced on AZ31 Mg Alloy

Luca Pezzato et al.

Summary: By optimizing the composition of the electrolyte and process parameters, hydroxyapatite was successfully formed on the surface of AZ31 alloy for bioabsorbable implants. Compared to traditional PEO treatment, the coating produced on the PEO-BIO sample was thicker, more porous, and had zones enriched in Ca and P. The corrosion resistance of the PEO-BIO sample was comparable with traditional PEO treatment and higher than the untreated alloy.
