Role of microstructural phases in enhanced mechanical properties of additively manufactured IN718 alloy

Sumit Choudhary et al.

Summary: The effect of different microstructural phases on mechanical and fatigue properties of additively manufactured Inconel 718 alloy was investigated in three different material conditions: as-built, as-built-machined, and as-built-heat-treated. The as-built samples showed a continuous structure of columnar and cellular dendrites of laves phases due to microsegregation. Machining reduced surface roughness and improved tensile and fatigue strength. Heat treatment resulted in dissolution of melt pool boundaries, breakdown of dendritic structure, and improved mechanical and fatigue properties. Four types of fatigue damage mechanisms were observed. The changes in properties were correlated with microstructural changes.

Microstructure, mechanical property and heat treatment schedule of the Inconel 718 manufactured by low and high power laser powder bed fusion

Huihui Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructure, mechanical properties, and heat treatment schedule of Inconel 718 alloy produced by low and high power laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). The increase in laser volumetric energy density results in larger gamma-dendrite size and wider Laves phase, but does not significantly increase the number of strengthening phase. The LPBFed Inconel 718 samples exhibit a high tensile strength of 1087 MPa and yield strength of 834.7 MPa, surpassing the casting standard.

The formation and dissolution mechanisms of Laves phase in Inconel 718 fabricated by selective laser melting compared to directed energy deposition and cast

Shuya Zhang et al.

Summary: This study explains the unexpected increase of Laves phase in Inconel 718 manufactured by selective laser melting (SLM) and clarifies its distinct dissolution behavior during heat treatment through a comparative analysis. SLM-built IN718 has a higher cooling rate, resulting in more trapped Nb atoms in the matrix and fewer inter-dendritic Laves phases. The dissolution of Laves phase during homogenization treatment is controlled by three-dimensional diffusion and interface reaction processes.

Effect of Deformation Parameters of an Initial Aged GH4169 Superalloy on Its Microstructural Evolution during a New Two-Stage Annealing

Mingsong Chen et al.

Summary: This study explores the effect of deformation parameters on microstructure evolution during the new two-stage annealing method. The results show that the deformation parameters mainly affect the grain microstructure by influencing the content, distribution, and morphology of the delta phase after deformation. When the deformation temperature is high, the complete dissolution behavior of the delta phase nuclei promotes the dispersion distribution of the b phase, resulting in a fine and heterogeneous microstructure. However, a high retained content of delta phase nuclei leads to the formation of clusters of intragranular delta phases and slows down the elimination of the mixed grain microstructure.

Merve Nur Dogu et al.

Summary: The recrystallization and grain growth behavior of IN718 alloy manufactured by laser powder bed fusion were studied. The texture evolution of the samples under different temperatures and holding times was investigated, and it was found that the formation of recrystallization nuclei was related to high defect density regions, while the presence of non-coherent precipitates limited the growth of recrystallized grains.
