An innovative TiB whisker architecture of titanium matrix composite devised by scanning electron beam remodeling

Ning Li et al.

Summary: A high-performance titanium matrix composite with innovative TiB whiskers reinforcement architecture was fabricated using scanning electron beam remodeling. The ultimate tensile strength of the remodeled titanium matrix composites was significantly improved with the contribution of fine-grain strengthening, whisker strengthening, and sub-structural strengthening, while the wear resistance was also reinforced. This research provides unique thoughts and references for the preparation of higher performance titanium matrix composites.

Graded microstructure and properties of TiCp/Ti6Al4V composites manufactured by laser melting deposition

Jiandong Wang et al.

Summary: In this paper, TiCp/Ti6Al4V composites were fabricated using laser melting deposition (LMD) technology and the microstructure and microhardness of different deposited layers were analyzed. The results show that the composites have a graded microstructure and microhardness distribution. The microhardness increases gradually from the bottom layer to the top layer in the low power composite, while the high power composite shows a more significant increase in microhardness.

The α phase recrystallization mechanism and mechanical properties of a near-α titanium matrix composite

Zhuangzhuang Zheng et al.

Summary: The recrystallization mechanism, microstructure evolution, and tensile fracture behavior of in-situ (TiBw + TiCp)/near-alpha titanium matrix composites are investigated in this paper. It is found that subgrain boundaries formation within alpha(p) is caused by strong recovery. The reinforcements play a crucial role in the recrystallization of the alpha phase. The room temperature ductility is influenced by the size of silicides, slip transmission between alpha(p) and alpha/beta colony, and the morphology of the microstructure. The composites exhibit a balance between strength and ductility, making them promising for applications in the aerospace field.

Effects of heat treatment on interfacial characteristics and mechanical properties of titanium matrix composites reinforced with discontinuous carbon fibers

S. Lv et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of heat treatment on the interfacial bonding in titanium matrix composites reinforced with carbon fibers. Results showed that the best mechanical properties were achieved at a heat treatment temperature of 900 degrees C. Suitable interfacial reaction and fine grain size were identified as critical factors for obtaining high-performance CFs/TMCs.
