Heterostructured materials

Yuntian Zhu et al.

Summary: Heterostructured materials are a new class of materials composed of heterogeneous zones with dramatically different properties. They exhibit superior mechanical or physical properties that surpass their conventional homogenous counterparts. This review focuses on the structural heterostructured materials, which achieve their superior mechanical properties through hetero-deformation induced strengthening and work hardening. The unique deformation behavior of these materials, along with their wide application potential, is driving the rapid development of the field.

Prominent role of reversed austenite on corrosion property of super 13Cr martensitic stainless steel

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: The microstructure and corrosion properties of super 13Cr martensitic stainless steel processed by different tempering methods were investigated. It was found that the volume fraction of reversed austenite reached a maximum of 13.5 vol.% with two-step tempering. The reversed austenite nucleated and distributed near the boundaries of martensite laths during tempering, and its growth was promoted by the diffusion of Ni, Mn, and C. The presence of reversed austenite, enriched with Ni, Mn, C, and with an ultrafine size, contributed to the improved corrosion resistance of the steel. Potentiodynamic polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy confirmed that the two-step tempered specimen exhibited better pitting resistance and a thicker passivation film compared to the other samples. The beneficial effect of reversed austenite on the corrosion properties of the steel was confirmed.

Simultaneous improvement of strength and ductility in ZK60 magnesium alloy by constructing the bimodal grain structure

Peng Peng et al.

Summary: The microstructure and mechanical properties of a commercial magnesium (Mg) ZK60 alloy were analyzed to enhance the application of Mg alloys. The alloy exhibited a bimodal grain structure and showed a good combination of strength and ductility. The formation of the bimodal structure was attributed to the PSN and Zener pinning effects. The study provides a low-cost and efficient strategy for improving mechanical properties by regulating the pre-extrusion microstructure.

High strength and high ductility achieved in a heterogeneous lamella-structured magnesium alloy

Tong Wang et al.

Summary: This research has achieved excellent strength-ductility synergy in magnesium alloys by introducing a heterogeneous lamella structure. Strengthening and enhanced ductility were achieved through the non-uniform distribution of hetero-deformation induced stress, grain-boundary disclinations, and intergranular slip transfers. This provides a new approach to address the strength-ductility trade-off dilemma in magnesium alloys.

Activating dispersed strain bands in tensioned nanostructure layer for high ductility: The effects of microstructure inhomogeneity

Yanfei Wang et al.

Summary: This study explores the influence of microstructure inhomogeneity on the plastic behavior of nanostructured layers. It is found that the intra-layer microstructure inhomogeneity leads to the formation of dispersed strain bands, while the inter-layer inhomogeneity stabilizes these strain bands and suppresses strain localization. Additionally, by activating hierarchical nanotwinning and dislocation activity, the nanostructured layer exhibits ductility and further work hardening.

Dual-phase hetero-structured strategy to improve ductility of a low carbon martensitic steel

J. X. Huang et al.

Summary: The martensitic transformation greatly enhances the strength of low-carbon steels, but usually at the expense of ductility. By creating a dual-phase heterostructure through annealing and cold rolling, a high strength and ductility combination steel was achieved. The hetero-deformation induced stress in the sample contributed to the improved mechanical properties of the steel.

Enhanced tensile properties by heterogeneous grain structures and coherent precipitates in a CoCrNi-based medium entropy alloy

Zihan Zhang et al.

Summary: A dual heterogeneous structure consisting of both heterogeneous grain structure and coherent L1(2) nanoprecipitates is achieved in a CoCrNi-based medium entropy alloy. Aging leads to an increase in the volume fraction of L1(2) phase and a decrease in the corresponding interspacing, resulting in enhanced heterogeneity. Unaged samples exhibit better tensile properties compared to alloys with homogeneous and heterogeneous grain structures. Aged samples demonstrate improved strength and ductility, with hetero-deformation-induced hardening playing a crucial role, particularly at the elasto-plastic transition stage.

Mechanical response of the constrained nanostructured layer in heterogeneous laminate

Yanfei Wang et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively investigates the mechanical response of a nanostructured Cu-10Zn layer constrained by coarse-grained Cu layers, revealing unique mechanical behaviors attributed to inter-layer constraint. The nanostructured layer displays large uniform elongation, moderate work hardening, and gradually reduced engineering stress, mainly due to the dispersed stable strain bands formed by the inter-layer constraint, enabling extensive activation of mechanical twinning and stacking faults. These findings provide new insights into the deformation and load-bearing mechanisms of heterostructures.
