Effect of process parameters of fused deposition modeling on mechanical properties of poly-ether-ether-ketone and carbon fiber/poly-ether-ether-ketone

Pei Wang et al.

Summary: As a rapidly developing additive manufacturing technology, fused deposition modeling (FDM) has become widespread in many industry fields. The mechanical properties of printed parts are largely influenced by various process parameters, and the use of poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) and carbon fibers (CFs) can enhance the performance of the materials.

Hybridization Effects on Bending and Interlaminar Shear Strength of Composite Laminates

Alice Monjon et al.

Summary: Fiber-reinforced composites are gradually replacing traditional materials in engineering applications, but their lack of toughness makes them unsuitable for some applications. Hybridization, combining different types of fibers, can improve the mechanical properties. The study found an ideal fiber content that maximizes both properties and recommends specific placement of fibers based on their type.

Compressive Behaviour of 3D-Printed PETG Composites

Sara Valvez et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical behavior of 3D-printed PETG composites reinforced with carbon or Kevlar fibers, specifically focusing on compression. Through static, stress relaxation, and creep tests, it was found that the addition of fibers reduced the yield compressive strength and compressive displacement, while increasing the compressive modulus. The stress relaxation behavior showed a decrease in compressive stresses over time, while the creep response resulted in greater compressive displacement. The presence of fibers amplified these effects.

Fused Filament Fabrication-4D-Printed Shape Memory Polymers: A Review

Sara Valvez et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing (AM) produces components/structures layer-by-layer, with 4D printing combining 3D printing with time to create additively manufactured components that respond to external stimuli using shape-memory materials. Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are the most suitable materials for additive manufacturing, with shape memory polymer compounds (SMPCs) serving as an effective alternative. Fused filament fabrication (FFF) is the most widely used additive manufacturing technique.

M. Ahmadifar et al.

Summary: This review paper provides recent developments in the Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) approach for composite materials, focusing on influencing parameters and their impact on the strength/bonding or physicochemical characterizations of FFF-fabricated parts. An overview of the mechanical properties of printed parts for different composite material systems is presented and discussed. The study considers three types of reinforced polymers in FFF process: filled reinforced polymers, continuous fiber-reinforced polymers, and short fiber reinforced polymers.

The Effect of Annealing on Additive Manufactured ULTEM™ 9085 Mechanical Properties

Yongjie Zhang et al.

Summary: FFF is increasingly used in aviation industry for manufacturing end use parts, though mainly for low criticality lightly loaded parts due to poor mechanical performance. To improve mechanical properties, thermal annealing is commonly used, but issues like distortion and the need for jigs limit its effectiveness. This research proposes a novel low temperature thermal annealing method to enhance mechanical performance of FFF parts without significant distortion, as demonstrated by improved tensile strength and reduced strain concentration in annealed coupons.
