Effect of Mo addition on hydrogen segregation at α-Fe grain boundaries: A first-principles investigation of the mechanism by which Mo addition improves hydrogen embrittlement resistance in high-strength steels

Kazuma Ito et al.

Summary: The development of high-strength steels is essential for achieving a decarbonized society. The addition of molybdenum (Mo) has been proven effective in addressing the problem of hydrogen embrittlement, but its underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, a calculation method was developed to evaluate the impact of adding alloying elements on the grain boundary segregation of hydrogen (H) using first-principles calculations. The results showed that a small amount of Mo segregates to α-Fe grain boundaries and reduces the grain boundary H concentration due to repulsive interactions between Mo and H. This information can contribute to the development of high-strength steels with excellent resistance to hydrogen embrittlement.

Grain boundary segregation and toughness of friction-stir-welded high-phosphorus weathering steel

Takumi Kawakubo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the microstructural changes of a high-P weathering steel after friction stir welding using three-dimensional atom probe tomography analysis. The experimental results showed that grain size affects the non-equilibrium grain boundary segregation after FSW, with grain boundaries facilitating fast diffusion of carbon leading to almost equilibrium segregation, while the segregation of phosphorus was independent of grain size.

Synergy of strengthening and toughening of a Cu-rich precipitate-strengthened steel

Xinghao Wei et al.

Summary: A high strength steel with similar to 930 MPa yield strength and excellent low temperature toughness has been developed. The steel consists of a fine lath martensite with rod-like Cu precipitates. The high strength is achieved through a combination of solid-solution strengthening, dislocation strengthening, grain boundary strengthening, and precipitation strengthening of Cu-precipitates. The instrumented Charpy impact results indicate that the crack propagation is the main factor affecting the ductile brittle transition temperature (DBTT) while the dislocation density affects both crack initiation and propagation. The fine lath structure of the low carbon martensite enhances crack resistance and delays rapid crack propagation at low temperatures. The strengthening and toughening mechanisms are thoroughly discussed.

The segregation of transition metals to iron grain boundaries and their effects on cohesion

Han Lin Mai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the segregation, co-segregation, and cohesion effects of various transition metals in ferritic-iron grain boundaries. The results demonstrate that different grain boundary characters affect not only the segregation behavior of transition metals, but also their effects on cohesion. The study also introduces a novel quantitative method for assessing the effects of segregated elements on interfacial cohesion and reveals significant variations in solute-solute interactions at grain boundaries compared to the bulk.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of cooling rate on the microstructure and mechanical properties of SH-UHSS, and found that the optimal cooling rate is 3 C.min(-1). The refinement and precipitation of martensite matrix and carbides contribute to the increased hardness and strength, while the refinement of blocks enhances toughness.

Effects of solid solution and grain-boundary segregation of Mo on hydrogen embrittlement in 32MnB5 hot-stamping steels

Jisung Yoo et al.

Summary: The addition of Mo can reduce the effects of hydrogen embrittlement in 32MnB5 steel and improve its resistance by decreasing hydrogen diffusivity and changing crack propagation path. Experimental results show that the addition of Mo significantly reduces ductility loss in H-charged steel, indicating higher hydrogen embrittlement resistance.

Refinement of Cu-M2C precipitates and improvement of strength and toughness by Ti microalloying in a Cu-bearing steel

L. Y. Kan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of Ti microalloying on the refinement of Cu and M2C carbides in an ultrahigh-strength Fe0.05C-1.3Cu steel, leading to improved strength and toughness. Results showed that Ti-containing steel had higher yield strength and impact toughness compared to Ti-free steel due to a higher density of Cu and M2C carbides co-precipitation. The enhancement in precipitation strengthening from Cu-M2C precipitates in Ti-containing steel was calculated to be 69 MPa higher than that in Ti-free steel, with high toughness attributed to a smaller prior austenite grain size and higher density of high angle grain boundaries deflecting crack propagation.

Summary: The study showed that the addition of Mn, Cr, and Mo can enhance the resistance to temper softening in Fe-N martensite, with Cr and Mo alloys experiencing secondary hardening at higher tempering temperatures. The formation mechanisms of different alloy nitrides were identified through various microstructural observations and chemical analyses.
