Effect of microstructure on mechanical properties of titanium-steel explosive welding interface

Qiang Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of microstructure on the mechanical properties of titanium-steel explosive welding interface. Different zones with distinct microstructures were identified along the detonation direction, showing varying strengths and types of defects. The periodic wavy interface in the steady detonation zone exhibited the highest strength, while defects in the vortex area had significant effects on the mechanical properties.

Understanding interface evolution during explosive welding of silver foil and Q235 substrate through experimental observation coupled with simulation

Ming Yang et al.

Summary: Explosive welding was used to manufacture Ag coating on Fe substrate in this study. The investigation of microstructure evolutions and governing mechanisms during the collision process revealed that the developed process enabled the attainment of high-quality Ag coatings without geometric defects. Simulation accurately reproduced the observed wavy interface and vortex structure, contributing to the understanding of grain structure evolution and hardness distribution.

Interfacial reactions and microstructure related properties of explosively welded tantalum and steel sheets with copper interlayer

H. Paul et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive study of the microstructure-property relationships in Ta and stainless or carbon steel composites fabricated by explosive welding using Cu interlayer. The study reveals complex microstructures in interfacial layers, phase transformation mechanisms in reaction regions, and competition between strain-hardening and softening processes in parent sheets. The micro hardness values of the welded sheets increased as the joining interface approached, except for the layers directly adhering to large reaction regions, where a decrease in micro-hardness was observed.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of the Ag/316L composite plate fabricated by explosive welding

Hui Zhao et al.

Summary: The present research shows that the explosively welded Ag/316L composite plate has a typical structure with a transition layer, melted region, and Ag rich layer formed along the interface. The microstructure evolution increases the hardness of the area adjacent to the interface. In terms of mechanical properties, the composite plate exhibits good bending properties but the discontinuously distributed oxides along the interface are detrimental to deformability. The average yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation of the composite plate are 350 MPa, 690 MPa, and 39%, respectively, with an average shear strength of 177 MPa. Such mechanical properties can be attributed to its good interfacial structure and refined grains.

Microstructure characterization and tensile shear failure mechanism of the bonding interface of explosively welded titanium-steel composite

Qiang Zhou et al.

Summary: The dissimilar joining of TA2/Q235 using explosive welding technology has been successful. The interface bonding shear strength was measured to be approximately 345 MPa, with failure occurring along the interface wave direction. Various microscopy techniques were utilized to investigate the failure mechanism and mechanical properties of the interface.
