Pronounced Suppression and X-Pattern Merging of Equatorial Ionization Anomalies After the 2022 Tonga Volcano Eruption

Ercha Aa et al.

Summary: Following the 2022 Tonga Volcano eruption, the equatorial ionization anomaly crests in the American sector experienced severe suppression and deformation. The daytime crests collapsed towards the equator, forming a single band of enhanced density, while the evening crests formed a unique X-pattern. The volcano-induced disturbances affected the ionosphere-thermosphere disturbances and thermospheric wind.

Hemispherically Asymmetric Evolution of Nighttime Ionospheric Equatorial Ionization Anomaly in the American Longitude Sector

Xuguang Cai et al.

Summary: The GOLD mission observed the hemispherically asymmetric evolution of the equatorial ionization anomaly after sunset on 19 November 2018, with the southern crest shifting poleward but the northern crest remaining in the same latitude region. This asymmetric evolution was due to the hemispheric asymmetry in plasma transport by E x B drifts and neutral winds.

A Spherical Harmonic Model of Earth's Lithospheric Magnetic Field up to Degree 1050

E. Thebault et al.

Summary: The detailed mapping of Earth's magnetic field, using satellite and near-surface measurements, has produced a global model with SH degree 1050 that is in agreement with previous satellite-based models at large wavelengths. The model is stable when downward continued to the Earth's surface and fits the CHAMP and Swarm satellite data down to expected noise levels.

A Synoptic-Scale Wavelike Structure in the Nighttime Equatorial Ionization Anomaly

J. Rodriguez-Zuluaga et al.

Summary: Both ground- and satellite-based airglow imaging have been used to study the low-latitude ionosphere, focusing on the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) morphology and dynamics. The NASA GOLD mission provides far-ultraviolet airglow images from a geostationary orbit, capturing a wavelike structure in the nighttime EIA. Initial analyses show a symmetric synoptic-scale structure with poleward displacements and the presence of equatorial plasma depletions (EPDs).

Regulation of ionospheric plasma velocities by thermospheric winds

Thomas J. Immel et al.

Summary: Observations from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Ionospheric Connection Explorer have confirmed the link between thermospheric winds and ionospheric plasma variability, presenting challenges in predicting changes in Earth's equatorial ionosphere for geopositioning systems and radio communications. Improved prediction of Earth's plasma environment is expected through prediction of thermospheric winds.
