The Arctic Ocean's Beaufort Gyre

Mary-Louise Timmermans et al.

Summary: The Beaufort Gyre, a wind-driven circulation in the Arctic Ocean, is a key indicator of climate change and may play a role in high-latitude climate control. This review examines the state of knowledge on the Beaufort Gyre, including its driving forces, relationship with sea-ice cover, source waters, circulation, and energetics. Recent years have witnessed significant changes in the Beaufort Gyre system, with increased circulation, heat, and freshwater content accompanying sea-ice losses. The understanding of these changes is evaluated, and updated time series data on heat and freshwater content are provided.

Summertime Evolution of Net Community Production and CO2 Flux in the Western Arctic Ocean

Zhangxian Ouyang et al.

Summary: The study examines the seasonal and regional variabilities in metabolic status and the coupling of net community production (NCP) and air-sea CO2 fluxes in the western Arctic Ocean. It highlights the importance of considering local sea ice history in estimating NCP and reveals the diverse relationships between NCP and CO2 flux in different regions. The study provides insight into the biogeochemical evolution of rapidly changing polar oceans based on the NCP and CO2 flux in the western Arctic Ocean.
