On the upper ocean response of Bay of Bengal to very severe cyclones Phailin and Hudhud

Anju Issac Elizabeth et al.

Summary: This study presents the response of the upper ocean in the Bay of Bengal to two extreme post-monsoon tropical cyclones, Phailin and Hudhud. It was found that, despite Phailin being stronger than Hudhud, the cooling of the underlying ocean was more rapid and intense during the passage of Hudhud. Analysis suggests that vertical processes, horizontal advection, and the reduction in net heat flux contributed to the cooling in both cases, but the intensity of vertical processes was weaker in the case of Phailin.

Surface pCO2 variability in two contrasting basins of North Indian Ocean using satellite data

Sachiko Mohanty et al.

Summary: The study highlights the spatial and temporal variability of surface pCO(2) over the northern tropical Indian Ocean, which is influenced by a range of physical and biological processes. The results show distinct patterns of pCO(2) distribution in different monsoon seasons, with factors such as sea surface temperature, salinity, and phytoplankton blooms playing significant roles. Furthermore, the impact of tropical cyclones on surface pCO(2) variability is also examined, showing a decrease in pCO(2) values along the cyclone track due to cooling and phytoplankton blooms induced by vertical mixing of water masses.

Comprehending the role of different mechanisms and drivers affecting the sea-surface pCO2 and the air-sea CO2 fluxes in the Bay of Bengal: A modeling study

A. P. Joshi et al.

Summary: In this study, a coupled physical and biogeochemical model (ROMS+PISCES) was applied to analyze the drivers and mechanisms influencing the sea-surface pCO(2) and air-sea CO2 flux of the Bay of Bengal (BoB). The findings suggest that the north of BoB acts as a sink for atmospheric CO2, while the rest of the region acts as a source. The impact of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TALK) is predominant but contrasting in nature. Changes in DIC and TALK due to mixing result in high pCO(2) and positive CO2 flux. Biological activity partially counteracts the effect of mixing by reducing surface pCO(2). The CO2 uptake in the north is attributed to the solubility of CO2, influenced by salinity and temperature.

Tropical cyclone intensity modulated by the oceanic eddies in the Bay of Bengal

Navaneeth Kodunthirapully Narayanaswami et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of mesoscale oceanic eddies on two tropical cyclones, Phailin and Fani, in the Bay of Bengal. The research finds that the intensities of both cyclones changed rapidly after passing over the oceanic eddies. The analysis of oceanic conditions reveals that the cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies led to significant and weak sea surface temperature cooling, respectively. Understanding mesoscale eddies is crucial for improving cyclone intensity forecasts.

Impact of coastal upwelling dynamics on the pCO2 variability in the southeastern Arabian Sea

Jayashree Ghosh et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of coastal upwelling dynamics on the spatio-temporal variability of pCO2 in the southeastern Arabian Sea (SEAS). It finds that the cold deeper water rising to the surface during upwelling decreases surface ocean pCO2, while carbon-rich upwelling waters increase pCO2. Temperature, dissolved inorganic carbon, and biological activities also affect pCO2 variability, but coastal upwelling dynamics dominate in controlling this variability.

Global Synthesis of Air-Sea CO2 Transfer Velocity Estimates From Ship-Based Eddy Covariance Measurements

Summary: This study reevaluated the K-660 of CO2 and found a linear relationship with friction velocity in different wind conditions. Uncertainties of K-660 vary under different wind speeds and are influenced by sea state. Combining the grand average of K-660 with global wind speed distribution provides a global average transfer velocity.

Variability in Sea Surface pCO2 and Controlling Factors in the Bay of Bengal Based on buoy Observations at 15°N, 90°E

Summary: This study investigates the diurnal variability of CO2 partial pressure at the sea surface in the Bay of Bengal and its impact on air-sea CO2 flux estimations. The results show that temperature and biological activity play significant roles in the diurnal variations of pCO(2)sea. The effects of air-sea gas fluxes and mixing on the diurnal pCO(2)sea variability are minimal. The study emphasizes the importance of continuous pCO(2) measurements and higher sampling frequencies for accurate estimation of air-sea CO2 flux.

Evaluating the Arabian Sea as a regional source of atmospheric CO2: seasonal variability and drivers

Alain de Verneil et al.

Summary: This study investigates the seasonal air-sea CO2 exchange in the Arabian Sea using a high-resolution model. The results show that dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity uncertainties contribute to the greatest discrepancies. The model successfully captures the intense monsoon dynamics in the Arabian Sea and outperforms neural network approaches in replicating the large variability in summertime pCO(2).

Wind, Convection and Fetch Dependence of Gas Transfer Velocity in an Arctic Sea-Ice Lead Determined From Eddy Covariance CO2 Flux Measurements

J. Prytherch et al.

Summary: This study directly determined the CO2 gas transfer velocity in the central Arctic Ocean during the summer-autumn transition using eddy covariance flux measurements, finding a quadratic dependence on wind speed and a 30% lower value than commonly used open-ocean parameterizations. Additionally, gas transfer velocities were found to be influenced by the dimension of the lead, suggesting that incorporating lead width data may be necessary for regional gas exchange estimates.

Seasonal cycle of surface ocean pCO2 and pH in the northern Indian Ocean and their controlling factors

Kunal Chakraborty et al.

Summary: The study examines the seasonal variability of surface ocean pCO(2) and pH in the northern Indian Ocean, attributing the changes to factors such as temperature, DIC, ALK, and salinity. The western Arabian Sea experiences significant seasonal variance of pCO(2) due to coastal upwelling dynamics, while the Bay of Bengal shows smaller amplitudes controlled by upper ocean mixed layer dynamics. Temperature and DIC contribute significantly to the seasonal variance of pCO(2) and pH in the western Arabian Sea, while ALK and salinity play complementary roles in inducing seasonal variances in the southeastern Arabian Sea.
