A new compositional estimate for refractory lower continental crust with implications for the first terrestrial Pb-isotope paradox

Robert B. Emo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mineralogy and geochemistry of mafic granulite xenoliths from eastern Australia and the Kola Peninsula, Russia, and finds that the lower continental crust is composed of refractory material, undifferentiated material, and felsic or metapelitic material. A new estimate for the average composition of the lower continental crust is calculated, taking into account these components.

Phanerozoic Evolution of Lithospheric Structures of the North China Craton

Yixian Xu et al.

Summary: This study presents a method to reconstruct the Paleozoic-lithospheric structures of the North China Craton (NCC) and reveals that there was massive thinning in the eastern East Block (EB) after the Paleozoic, while thickening occurred in the northern Ordos Basin and the region from the Weibei uplift to the South Taihang Mountains uplift. The calculated self-sustaining oscillation periods are in good agreement with the periodicity observed in the sedimentation rate of the Ordos Basin and basaltic underplating events in the Trans-North China Orogen. The results suggest that, apart from the EB, the Phanerozoic lithospheric modification of the NCC is mainly controlled by heat conduction and dissipation through the cratonic lithosphere.

WISTFUL: Whole-Rock Interpretative Seismic Toolbox for Ultramafic Lithologies

William J. Shinevar et al.

Summary: In this study, a tool called WISTFUL is introduced to help researchers analyze seismic datasets by quantitatively converting upper mantle seismic wave speeds into temperature, density, composition, and related parameters. The tool utilizes a large database, MATLAB functions, scripts, and user interfaces to provide features such as plotting relationships, calculating seismic wave speeds, and inverting temperature. The accuracy and sources of error in the methodology are evaluated through comparison of observed and calculated data.

Summary: The Ordos Basin in the Western North China Craton underwent significant lithospheric thinning in the Late Cretaceous and subsequent vertical thickening during that period. The ratio of mantle to surface heat flow gradually decreased to less than 50% since the Cenozoic.

Testing solution models for phase equilibrium (forward) modeling of partial melting experiments

Felix Gervais et al.

Summary: This study compares four sets of solution models for calculating isochemical phase diagram sections of partial melting experiments, with the model by Tajcmanova et al. (2009) showing better results for most parameters. It is suggested that this biotite model should be used for phase equilibrium modeling in the Ti-Mn-Na-Ca-K-Fe-Mg-Al-Si-H-O system.

No mafic layer in 80 km thick Tibetan crust

Gaochun Wang et al.

Summary: New seismic data reveals the presence of very low velocity geological structures in the thickest crust of the Lhasa region, predominantly composed of quartz rocks. This phenomenon provides new insights into the formation of extremely thick juvenile crust with predominantly felsic composition in continental collision zones.
