The sensitivity kernel perspective on GRACE mass change estimates

Thorben Doehne et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the second step of mass change estimation, which involves the analysis of spherical harmonic (SH) input datasets to obtain mass change estimates. The use of sensitivity kernels is proposed as a means to communicate, assess, and compare methods of mass change estimation.

Uncertainties of GRACE-Based Terrestrial Water Storage Anomalies for Arbitrary Averaging Regions

Eva Boergens et al.

Summary: This study uses a spatial covariance model for terrestrial water storage (TWS) data to estimate uncertainties in mean TWS time series, and compares them with formal uncertainties. The results show good agreement between the modeled and formal uncertainties in both spatial and temporal domains, and the appropriateness of the model is further confirmed in arid regions.

Along-Orbit Analysis of GRACE Follow-On Inter-Satellite Laser Ranging Measurements for Sub-Monthly Surface Mass Variations

Khosro Ghobadi-Far et al.

Summary: This article examines the sensitivity of GRACE-FO LRI measurements to sub-monthly time-variable gravity signals and presents an alternative analysis method for studying short-term mass changes. By combining the LRI observations with other data and models, high-frequency oceanic mass variability and sub-monthly variations in surface water can be detected.

How to quantify the accuracy of mass anomaly time-series based on GRACE data in the absence of knowledge about true signal?

Pavel Ditmar

Summary: A novel technique has been developed to assess noise levels in GRACE-based mass anomaly time-series. The technique uses an optimal combination of analyzed time-series with regularization. Validation tests show good performance of the technique, especially when a novel regularization functional is used. The analysis of GRACE models globally reveals that models from the Institute of Geodesy at Graz University of Technology and the Center of Space Research of the University of Texas at Austin generally have the lowest noise levels. Additionally, signal damping in regularized GRACE models is quantified.

Feasibility of a global inversion for spatially resolved glacial isostatic adjustment and ice sheet mass changes proven in simulation experiments

Matthias O. Willen et al.

Summary: This study presents a globally consistent inversion approach to estimate glacial isostatic adjustment effects, ice sheet mass changes, and firn air content variations in Greenland and Antarctica. The inversion method utilizes data from satellite gravimetry, satellite altimetry, regional climate modeling, and firn modeling, along with the full error-covariance information of all input data. Simulation experiments demonstrate that the proposed GIA parametrization in Antarctica can resolve GIA effects unpredicted by geophysical modeling, despite realistic limitations in input data.

Novel Along-Track Processing of GRACE Follow-On Laser Ranging Measurements Found Abrupt Water Storage Increase and Land Subsidence During the 2021 March Australian Flooding

Shin-Chan Han et al.

Summary: The eastern part of Australia experienced intense rainfall and flooding in March 2021 following extreme drought in 2019-2020, leading to the highest groundwater recharge speed and land subsidence recorded in the region over the past two decades. Compared to the dry conditions in 2020, the wet antecedent condition of soils in 2021 led to faster water replenishment and extensive runoff and flooding.
