Granting Sensorial Properties to Metal Parts through Friction Stir Processing

Pedro M. Ferreira et al.

Summary: Structural Health Monitoring systems assess the current condition of parts using sensors on the surface or embedded within. However, surface sensors are prone to damage and embedding sensors can weaken the part. This study presents an innovative Self-Sensing Material and its manufacturing process, where Barium Titanate particles were introduced and dispersed into an AA5083-H111 part using Friction Stir Processing (FSP). The distribution and concentration of the particles were evaluated, showing that higher concentrations grant enhanced sensitivity. The self-sensing material improved the part's mechanical behavior and exhibited an electrical sensitivity of 12.0 x 10-4 mu V/MPa.

Double active transient thermography

Miguel A. Machado et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new variant of Active Transient Thermography, called Double Active Transient Thermography, which aims to improve temperature contrast for polymer matrix composites parts produced by Additive Manufacturing. The introduction of a cold flow can increase temperature contrast up to 100%, with mid thickness defects benefitting the most from this technique. The improvement of the inspection procedure is achieved by enhancing the thermal contrast of defects and predicting when maximum contrasts occur.

On the design of a piezoelectric self-sensing smart composite laminate

Maria Elena Gino et al.

Summary: This study proposes a non-invasive method for piezoelectric functionalization of composite laminates using lead zirconate titanate micrometric powder, and evaluates the electromechanical properties with different powder volume fractions. The lead zirconate titanate powder laminates show higher electrical sensitivity and comparable shock resistance to the pristine laminates. Additionally, an analytical model is proposed to predict the electromechanical behavior of piezoelectric composites.

Characterisation of void and fiber distribution in 3D printed carbon-fiber/PEEK using X-ray computed tomography

S. Sommacal et al.

Summary: The study found that the 3D printing process did not eliminate the voids present in the feedstock filament, and the variation of key printing parameters had minor effects on void content in the printed samples. However, the depositional nature of the printing process strongly influenced the internal geometry of the samples.

Nondestructive testing of composite T-Joints by TNDT and other methods

Vladimir Vavilov et al.

Summary: This study utilized multiple thermal NDT methods to inspect CFRP T-joints, with the results showing that two-sided TNDT was able to detect simulated defects throughout the entire material thickness, while the detection capability of one-sided TNDT depended on the depth and size of the defects. Furthermore, ultrasonic infrared thermography and laser vibrometry were not effective in detecting the implants.

Benchmarking of Nondestructive Testing for Additive Manufacturing

Valdemar R. Duarte et al.

Summary: In this study, various nondestructive testing techniques were used to evaluate defects in complex-shaped parts manufactured through selective laser melting. It was found that no single technique can detect every type of defect, but using multiple techniques provides complementary and redundant information to critically evaluate the integrity of the parts. This approach is crucial for enhancing the reliability of defect detection in additive manufacturing and expanding its potential for critical structural applications.
