Nitrous oxide emissions and productivity of irrigated potato: Effects of nitrogen fertilization options

Shakila K. K. Thilakarathna et al.

Summary: Improved N management in intensive agriculture is necessary for reducing N2O emissions and maintaining high yields. Polymer-coated urea (PCU) and the nitrification inhibitor DMPSA were tested, along with their combinations with other fertilizers, to assess their effectiveness in reducing N2O emissions and improving potato productivity. Results showed that under specific conditions, strategies using DMPSA with urea or ASN can reduce N2O emissions while maintaining high potato yields.

Data-driven estimates of fertilizer-induced soil NH3, NO and N2O emissions from croplands in China and their climate change impacts

Ruoya Ma et al.

Summary: The use of nitrogen fertilizers in Chinese agricultural soils contributes significantly to global nitrogen cycle and climate change impacts. Hotspots of nitrogen emissions were identified in Central south and East regions of China, with rice, maize, and vegetable crops emerging as leading emitters. The study provides region-specific and crop-specific emission factors for gaseous nitrogen forms, which can help in improving global or regional cropland nitrogen emission inventories and mitigation strategies.

Carbon and water dynamics of a perennial versus an annual grain crop in temperate agroecosystems

Keunbae Kim et al.

Summary: This study compared the carbon dioxide and water fluxes between perennial and annual crops and found that perennial crops have a greater carbon sink capacity and higher carbon use efficiency compared to annual crops. Although perennial crops have higher evapotranspiration at the beginning of the growing season, the overall water use efficiency is similar between the two crops.

Growing season carbon dynamics differ in intermediate wheatgrass monoculture versus biculture with red clover

Susanne Wiesner et al.

Summary: Perennial grain bicultures and monocultures differ in carbon accumulation and evapotranspiration rates. Carbon loss after harvest is not recovered until 30 days post-harvest. Accounting for biomass removal and manure additions, bicultures are carbon neutral on average.

Increased Global Vegetation Productivity Despite Rising Atmospheric Dryness Over the Last Two Decades

Yang Song et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of the impacts of rising atmospheric dryness, temperature, and CO2 concentration on global vegetation productivity over the last two decades. It finds that despite the negative impact of increasing VPD, the warming and CO2 fertilization effects contribute to a widespread increase in vegetation productivity.

Greenhouse gas fluxes (CO2, N2O and CH4) of pea and maize during two cropping seasons: Drivers, budgets, and emission factors for nitrous oxide

Regine Maier et al.

Summary: Agriculture contributes considerably to global greenhouse gas emissions. The study used the eddy covariance technique and the random forest technique to investigate GHG fluxes in croplands. Environmental and vegetation factors were found to be more important drivers of GHG fluxes at field scale. Pea and maize acted as GHG sinks during the growing seasons, but substantial N2O emissions were observed during the early establishment phase.

Mitigated Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Cropping Systems by Organic Fertilizer and Tillage Management

Huarui Gong et al.

Summary: Application of organic fertilizers, especially microbial fertilizers, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase crop yield, particularly under suitable tillage practices. This study showed that microbial fertilizer application significantly reduced CO2, N2O, and CH4 emissions, while also improving crop yield in a short period of time.

Global importance of methane emissions from drainage ditches and canals

M. Peacock et al.

Summary: Research shows that globally, drainage ditches emit significant amounts of CH4, comparable to emissions from lakes, streams, reservoirs, and wetlands, contributing to a small percentage of global anthropogenic CH4 emissions. Emissions are positively correlated with temperature and highest from eutrophic ditches. Including ditch emissions in national GHG inventories is advocated to avoid incorrect conclusions about the impact of drainage-based land management on CH4 budgets.

Global Warming Potential Is Not an Ecosystem Property

Scott C. Neubauer

Summary: The article emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between greenhouse gas metrics and ecosystem greenhouse gas fluxes to avoid confusion. It suggests using global warming potential and sustained-flux global warming potential according to their original definitions, while employing CO2-equivalent greenhouse gas fluxes to accurately describe the weighted greenhouse gas exchanges.

Summary: This study quantified CO2 exchange over sugarcane and wheat growing season using the eddy covariance (EC) system, demonstrating seasonal and diurnal dynamics of CO2 absorption. The ecosystem acted as a carbon sink during the active growing season, but as a carbon source before sowing and post-harvesting of crops.

Summary: Based on a review of 57 global food security projection and quantitative scenario studies published in the past two decades, it is projected that the total global food demand will increase by 35% to 56% by 2050, while the population at risk of hunger is expected to change by -91% to +8%. Both ranges are significantly lower than previous projections.

Lutz Merbold et al.

Summary: A 5-year greenhouse gas exchange study of a intensively managed permanent grassland in Switzerland compared pre- and post-plowing GHG exchange, finding no memory effects on N2O and CH4 emissions but a considerable increase in CO2 uptake. The grassland acted as a carbon sink under usual management.
