Possible Dynamic Mechanisms of High- and Low-Latitude Wave Trains Over Eurasia and Their Impacts on Air Pollution Over the North China Plain in Early Winter

Xiadong An et al.

Summary: This study uses the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) to analyze the wave trains over Eurasia in boreal winter. It finds that the bifurcation of the wave train is related to the Rossby wave reflection near the Mediterranean, while the non-bifurcated wave train is mainly influenced by natural internal variability. The wave train associated with the EOF1 mode is suggested to be related to the eastern Pacific El Nino, while the wave train associated with the EOF2 mode is mainly induced by natural internal variability. The bifurcation type wave train tends to cause higher PM2.5 concentrations over the North China Plain.

Intraseasonal variation of the northeast Asian anomalous anticyclone and its impacts on PM2.5 pollution in the North China Plain in early winter

Xiadong An et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of the northeast Asian anomalous anticyclone (NAAA) on PM2.5 pollution in the North China Plain (NCP) during early winter. Results show that the NAAA usually forms rapidly three days prior to its peak day with a duration of eight days and its evolution is associated with Rossby waves from the North Atlantic. Moreover, the NAAA with a westward tilt is found to be mainly related to wavenumbers 3-4. Additionally, the study reveals that the probability of PM2.5 pollution lasting for at least three days in the NCP during November-January (NDJ) period is as high as 69% (80% for at least two days) from 2000 to 2021.

Effect of rainfall-induced diabatic heating over southern China on the formation of wintertime haze on the North China Plain

Xiadong An et al.

Summary: During the winters between 1985 and 2015, the North China Plain experienced heavy haze episodes that coincided with extreme rainfall in southern China. This study uses observations and model simulations to show that anomalous anticyclonic circulation, caused by Rossby wave trains, together with the north-south circulation system, plays a key role in modulating the haze over the North China Plain. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of diabatic heating related to precipitation in driving the north-south circulation system and the formation of haze.

Synergetic impacts of precursory climate drivers on interannual-decadal variations in haze pollution in North China: A review

Zhicong Yin et al.

Summary: Severe haze pollution in North China has been a major issue since winter 2012, with climate variability playing a significant role in the interannual-decadal variations in the number of haze days. Previous studies explored the impact of various climate drivers on HDNC separately, but lacked assessment of joint effects. This study reviews the impacts of climate drivers on HDNC, reveals synergetic effects, and identifies future research directions for subseasonal variations in HDNC and seasonal prediction of haze using numerical climate models.

Summary: The study shows that reduction of sea ice in the Barents-Kara Seas leads to a deepening of the East Asian trough in late winter, mainly through tropospheric and stratospheric pathways. Analysis using climate models and tracing models reveals that the climate system response to BKS sea ice reduction is primarily through the propagation of long Rossby waves and enhanced upward planetary waves to impact the East Asian trough.
