Geochemical studies of low molecular weight organic acids in the atmosphere: sources, formation pathways, and gas/particle partitioning

Kimitaka Kawamura

Summary: Low molecular weight monocarboxylic acids (LMW monoacids, C1-C10) are the most abundant gaseous organic compound class in the atmosphere. They can contribute to rainwater acidity, particle formation, and secondary organic aerosol production. This paper reviews the distributions of LMW monoacids in different environments, discusses their sources and formation mechanisms, and highlights their importance as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN).

Chemical Characteristics, Size Distributions, and Aerosol Liquid Water in Size-Resolved Coastal Urban Aerosols Allied with Distinct Air Masses over Tropical Peninsular India

Suresh Kumar Reddy Boreddy et al.

Summary: The study identified differences in carbonaceous, chemical components, and size distribution in aerosols collected under different polluted air masses. Southeasterly air masses enriched with secondary anthropogenic aerosols, while primary aerosols in northwesterly and southwest air masses mainly came from sea-salts, dust, and NOx emissions.

Low molecular weight dicarboxylic acids, oxocarboxylic acids and α-dicarbonyls as ozonolysis products of isoprene: Implication for the gaseous-phase formation of secondary organic aerosols

Srinivas Bikkina et al.

Summary: Oxidation of isoprene can lead to the production of oxalic acid, with methylglyoxal identified as an important intermediate. The relative abundances of methylglyoxal and oxalic acid fluctuate significantly during the reaction, suggesting a complex pathway of oxalic acid formation under dry conditions. The study proposes new reaction schemes for interpreting the ambient SOA composition and highlights the stable character of C-2 towards oxidation by hydroxyl radicals.
