Treatment of Tobacco Smoking A Review

Nancy A. Rigotti et al.

Summary: Cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the US, and quitting smoking can potentially add up to 10 years of life expectancy. Most smokers want to quit and usually make multiple attempts before achieving long-term abstinence. A combination of behavioral counseling and medication, particularly varenicline, is the most effective treatment for smoking cessation.

The effects of varenicline, bupropion, nicotine patch, and placebo on smoking cessation among smokers with major depression: A randomized clinical trial

Paul M. Cinciripini et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of smoking cessation pharmacotherapy among smokers with major depressive disorder (MDD). The results suggest that varenicline plus counseling may be the best pharmacological option for treating smoking in MDD smokers, including those with recurrent episodes, due to its higher efficacy effect size and similar risk of adverse events.

The effect of Varenicline and Bupropion on smoking cessation: A network meta-analysis of 20 randomized controlled trials

Kangle Guo et al.

Summary: This study conducted a network meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of varenicline (VAR), bupropion (BUP), and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) on smoking cessation. The results showed that VAR, BUP, and NRT alone were more effective than placebo in increasing the odds of smoking abstinence. Combined interventions were superior to monotherapy, and VAR combined with other interventions had the best smoking cessation effect.

Person-years of life lost and lost earnings from cigarette smoking-attributable cancer deaths, United States, 2019

Farhad Islami et al.

Summary: There is a lack of state-specific information on lost earnings due to smoking-attributable cancer deaths. This study estimated the person-years of life lost (PYLL) and lost earnings associated with cigarette smoking-attributable cancer deaths in the United States. It was found that lost earnings due to smoking-attributable cancer deaths are substantial, with the highest rates observed in states with weaker tobacco control policies.
