Emotional Information Processing and Assessment of Cognitive Functions in Social Anxiety Disorder: An Event-Related Potential Study

Dilek Tetik et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate deficits in cognitive areas and electrophysiological alterations in patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and their effects on the clinical severity of SAD. The results showed that SAD patients had lower scores in reading mind, longer P300 latencies, and higher false alarm scores in rapid visual information processing task. The impairment in cognitive functions such as sustained attention and emotion recognition may negatively affect the clinical presentation of SAD.

Social Cognition in Paediatric Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Zhi Xiang On et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown significant impacts of childhood traumatic brain injury on social cognition, particularly in theory of Mind (ToM) and pragmatic language tasks. Despite relatively intact basic social cognitive skills, children with TBI are vulnerable to deficits in higher-order aspects of social cognition such as ToM and pragmatic language. Further research using larger samples and longitudinal prospective studies are needed to evaluate the effects of injury on social cognitive outcomes and recovery after pediatric TBI.

Emotional Threat Perception and Its Association with Neurocognition in Social Anxiety Disorder

Anjali Thomas Mathai et al.

Summary: Individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) demonstrated deficits in attention processing and threat perception, with decreased performance in sustained and focused attention, longer reaction time to threatening emotions, and higher over-identification of threat emotions. However, no group difference was found in visuospatial working memory tasks. The link between attention deficits and enhanced threat perception in SAD may help improve understanding of the disorder and plan appropriate interventions.

Impaired theory of mind and emotion recognition in pediatric bipolar disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Eren Halac et al.

Summary: Upon conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis, it was discovered that youth with pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD) exhibit significant impairments in social cognition, specifically in emotion recognition (ER) and theory of mind (ToM). The results of the meta-analysis indicated that deficits in social cognitive abilities might be an illness-related trait of PBD.

Social cognition in multiple sclerosis and its subtypes: A meta-analysis

XiaoGuang Lin et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with MS and its subtypes exhibit impairments in core social cognitive processing, including ToM and FER, compared to healthy controls. Different MS subtypes show varying levels of impairment in ToM and FER, suggesting the potential for tailored social cognitive interventions in MS.

The Relationship of Theory of Mind and Attachment Characteristics with Disease Severity in Social Anxiety Disorder

Ilker Kucukparlak et al.

Summary: The study found that theory of mind functions in SAD patients were impaired compared to healthy controls, independent of anxiety or depression levels. Attachment anxiety and avoidance dimensions have negative effects on SAD disease severity. The inverse relationship between theory of mind ability and SAD severity suggests that interventions to improve social cognition may decrease disease severity in SAD.
