Melatonin metabolism, signaling and possible roles in plants

Kyoungwhan Back

Summary: The biosynthesis, levels, signaling, and possible roles of melatonin and its metabolites in plants were summarized. Different plants have differential levels of melatonin and its metabolites, leading to varying physiological effects. Melatonin mediates important functions in growth stimulation and stress tolerance through its antioxidant activity and function in activating the MAPK cascade.

The melatonin metabolite N1-acetyl-5-methoxykynuramine facilitates long-term object memory in young and aging mice

Hikaru Iwashita et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of melatonin and its metabolites on cognitive processes, with AMK showing stronger effects on object memory and the ability to improve age-related memory issues. Additionally, inhibiting the melatonin metabolic pathway disrupted object memory, highlighting the important role of AMK in long-term memory formation.

Pituitary Hormones mRNA Abundance in the Mediterranean Sea Bass Dicentrarchus labrax: Seasonal Rhythms, Effects of Melatonin and Water Salinity

Jack Falcon et al.

Summary: The hormone melatonin plays a crucial role in regulating pituitary hormone production in European sea bass, influenced by factors like photoperiod, temperature, and salinity. Seasonal variations in mRNA abundance of pituitary hormones and melatonin receptors were observed in different fish groups raised in sea water and brackish water. In vitro experiments showed that melatonin's effects on pituitary hormones varied based on concentration, month investigated, and fish's prior adaptation to different salinities, highlighting the diverse responses of the pituitary gland in fish facing changing environmental conditions.

Detection of Serotonin, Melatonin, and Their Metabolites in Honey

Tae-Kang Kim et al.

Summary: Melatonin and serotonin, which are endogenous neurotransmitters and hormones produced from tryptophan metabolism, were identified and quantified in honey samples from Australia, USA, and Poland using LCMS technology. The levels of these metabolites varied depending on the source of the honey, suggesting a potential impact on the addictive and health-related properties of honey.

Misbalance of thyroid hormones after two weeks of exposure to artificial light at night in Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis

Franziska Kupprat et al.

Summary: The study found that artificial light at night may affect the thyroid hormone levels in Eurasian perch, especially under high-intensity lighting conditions. Endocrine disruption in the thyroid gland could have serious implications for metabolic rates, as well as developmental and reproductive processes.
