Evaluation of Vitamin D Levels in Patients With Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Sofia Tsitsou et al.

Summary: This cross-sectional study in a Mediterranean country examined the association between vitamin D levels and diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). The results showed that while there was no difference in serum vitamin D levels between patients with and without DFU, both groups had a high prevalence of deficiency and insufficiency, highlighting the need for screening and supplementation with vitamin D in individuals with diabetes mellitus.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of high-dose compared to low-dose vitamin D3 on healing of chronic diabetic foot ulcers. The results showed that high-dose vitamin D3 was significantly more effective in promoting ulcer healing compared to low-dose vitamin D3.

Vitamin D Status in a Bulgarian Population With Type 2 Diabetes and Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Ani S. Todorova et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess vitamin D status in patients with type 2 diabetes and diabetic foot ulcers. The results showed that patients with DFU had lower levels of 25(OH)D compared to those without foot ulcers, and the subgroup with diabetic peripheral neuropathy also had lower levels compared to participants without complications. This suggests that vitamin D deficiency may play a role in the development of diabetes complications.

Vitamin C improves healing of foot ulcers: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

Jenny E. Gunton et al.

Summary: The study conducted a trial of vitamin C therapy for chronic foot ulcers at the Foot Wound Clinic, showing significant improvement in ulcer healing with vitamin C treatment and no amputations needed in the vitamin C group. Further research is needed to determine the effectiveness threshold for serum vitamin C levels and the possibility of better or lesser responding subgroups.

The effects of dietary/herbal supplements and the serum levels of micronutrients on the healing of diabetic foot ulcers in animal and human models: a systematic review

Mohammad Reza Amini et al.

Summary: The study aimed to summarize the effects of dietary and herbal supplements on DFU and evaluate the relationship between micronutrient serum levels and DFU. Findings suggested that some supplements, such as Vitamin D, Magnesium, and Zinc, may have positive effects on wound healing in DFUs. Further high-quality clinical trials and cohort studies are needed to confirm the roles of these supplements in DFU treatment.

Interaction between magnesium and methylglyoxal in diabetic polyneuropathy and neuronal models

Alexander Strom et al.

Summary: The lack of effective treatments for diabetic sensorimotor polyneuropathy has led to the search for new strategies to combat or prevent the condition. This study found that reduced serum magnesium levels and increased plasma methylglyoxal levels were associated with the development of the condition. Additionally, the interaction between magnesium and methylglyoxal played a role in methylglyoxal-dependent nerve dysfunction, with magnesium supplementation showing a neuroprotective effect.

Mechanisms Involved in the Relationship between Vitamin D and Insulin Resistance: Impact on Clinical Practice

Victoria Contreras-Bolivar et al.

Summary: Recent evidence has shown that vitamin D possesses anti-inflammatory properties and is associated with infections, autoimmune diseases, cardiometabolic diseases, and cancer development. The relationship between vitamin D and insulin resistance has gained attention, with low 25(OH)D levels being linked to various insulin resistance disorders. Vitamin D deficiency is common in the population and may accelerate the development of insulin resistance, closely related to diseases such as obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and polycystic ovary syndrome.

Summary: This study revealed that serum hs-CRP, PAB, and vitamin D are significantly associated with anthropometric and biochemical parameters in patients with diabetic foot ulcers, demonstrating important clinical implications. Low levels of vitamin D and high levels of hs-CRP and PAB may play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of diabetic foot ulcers.
