Association of triglyceride-glucose index and its 6-year change with risk of hypertension: A prospective cohort study

Yang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and hypertension risk in rural Chinese individuals. The findings revealed a positive association between elevated TyG index and incident hypertension, and the TyG index partially mediated the association between obesity and hypertension.

Prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension in China, 2004-18: findings from six rounds of a national survey

Mei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the recent trends in prevalence and management of hypertension in China, nationally and by population subgroups. The results showed that the standardized prevalence of hypertension in adults aged 18-69 in China increased from 20.8% in 2004 to 29.6% in 2010 and then decreased to 24.7% in 2018. Despite modest improvements in awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension, rates remained low in 2018. Of the estimated 274 million adults with hypertension in 2018, control was inadequate in approximately 240 million individuals. The gap in hypertension control between urban and rural areas persisted.

Treating chronic diseases without tackling excess adiposity promotes multimorbidity

Naveed Sattar et al.

Summary: Few people reach old age without taking multiple drugs and undergoing investigations, often due to chronic conditions caused or exacerbated by excess adiposity. Weight management, which is rarely discussed or attempted, can play a role in addressing these conditions. There is a need for more research on the effects of effective weight management on age and weight-mediated symptoms.

Common metabolic features of hypertension and type 2 diabetes

Isao Usui

Summary: Hypertension and type 2 diabetes often occur together due to shared pathophysiological mechanisms. Both diseases are induced by factors such as obesity-induced hyperinsulinemia, activation of the sympathetic nervous system, chronic inflammation, and changes in adipokines. Vascular complications resulting from these diseases include endothelial dysfunction, peripheral vasodilation/constriction dysfunction, arteriosclerosis, and chronic kidney disease. Insulin resistance in the vasculature and increased fluid volume are major factors contributing to elevated blood pressure in obese and insulin-resistant patients, while peripheral vascular resistance plays a major role in hypertension in non-obese and/or insulin-deficient patients.

Hallmarks of aging: An expanding universe

Carlos Lopez-Otin et al.

Summary: Aging is driven by hallmarks that manifest with age, accelerate aging when accentuated experimentally, and can be decelerated, stopped, or reversed with therapeutic interventions. The twelve proposed hallmarks of aging include genomic instability, telomere attrition, epigenetic alterations, loss of proteostasis, disabled macroautophagy, deregulated nutrient-sensing, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, stem cell exhaustion, altered intercellular communication, chronic inflammation, and dysbiosis. These hallmarks are interconnected with each other and with the recently proposed hallmarks of health.

Why does obesity cause diabetes?

Samuel Klein et al.

Summary: The accumulation of excessive body fat can lead to type 2 diabetes, and the risk of type 2 diabetes increases with an increase in body mass index. The global increase in obesity has therefore resulted in a corresponding increase in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes. The mechanisms linking obesity and type 2 diabetes involve complex changes in b cell function, adipose tissue biology, and multi-organ insulin resistance, which can be improved or even normalized through weight loss.

The association between Chinese Visceral Adipose Index and coronary heart disease: A cohort study in China

Yilin Xie et al.

Association between surrogate indicators of insulin resistance and risk of type 2 diabetes combined with hypertension among Chinese adults: two independent cohort studies

Jing Dong et al.

Summary: The study found positive associations between TyG and Mets-IR with the risk of T2D combined with hypertension in two cohorts. However, the association between TG/HDL and T2D combined with hypertension differed in the two cohorts. Additionally, BMI change may precede TyG index change, and the TyG index plays a mediating role in BMI-induced T2D combined with hypertension.

Multimorbidity

Soren T. Skou et al.

Summary: Multimorbidity has substantial effects on individuals, carers and society. The mechanisms underlying its development are complex and related to ageing and broader determinants of health. Little is known about prevention, but interventions focusing on psychosocial and behavioral factors are likely to be beneficial. Most clinical guidelines and healthcare training focus on single diseases, whereas multimorbidity requires person-centered care.
