Impact of ozone exposure on heart rate variability and stress hormones: A randomized-crossover study

Cuiping Wang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that acute ozone exposure can lead to an imbalance in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and an increase in the secretion of neuroendocrine stress hormones, potentially resulting in adverse cardiometabolic effects.

Decreased gray matter volume of the anterior insular cortex in patients with psychogenic erectile dysfunction: A voxel-based morphometry study

Ziyang Ma et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with pED showed decreased GMV in regions such as bilateral anterior insula, precentral gyrus, anterior cingulate cortex, fusiform gyrus, and cerebellum compared to HCs. Correlation analyses revealed that GMV in the bilateral anterior insula was positively correlated with symptom severity and duration in patients with pED.

Coordination of autonomic and endocrine stress responses to the Trier Social Stress Test in adolescence

Sarah Glier et al.

Summary: Dysregulations in autonomic and endocrine stress responses in adolescence are associated with the emergence of psychopathology. This study comprehensively evaluated the coordination of parasympathetic, sympathetic, and hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis components in 72 typically developing adolescents. The findings supported the predictions of the Adaptive Calibration Model and highlighted the importance of studying multisystem dynamics in understanding stress response regulation.

Identifying neuroimaging biomarkers for psychogenic erectile dysfunction by fusing multi-level brain information: A resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study

Xiaoyan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposed a novel machine learning framework to incorporate multi-level brain features to fully explore the neural representation of psychogenic erectile dysfunction (pED), a major component of erectile dysfunction in younger patients in China. Using resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data, the study identified discriminative brain maps between pED patients and healthy control subjects by analyzing amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation, regional homogeneity, and degree centrality as indices for local, regional, and global brain activity. The findings revealed multi-level aberrant brain representations in pED patients and highlighted potential therapeutic targets for targeted therapy.

Maternal-fetal stress and DNA methylation signatures in neonatal saliva: an epigenome-wide association study

Ritika Sharma et al.

Summary: Maternal stress before, during and after pregnancy has significant effects on the neurocognitive development of infants. This study aimed to find noninvasive epigenetic biomarkers of prenatal stress (PS) in newborns' saliva. Through DNA methylation analysis, significant associations were found between specific pregnancy worries and cortisol levels, and certain genes involved in secretion, transportation, signaling pathways, and neuronal signaling were identified. Early assessment of these noninvasive biomarkers can help detect at-risk babies and allocate resources for early intervention programs effectively.

Changes in heart rate variability of healthy subjects shortly exposed to printing shop particles and the effect of air purifier intervention

Lizhi Lyu et al.

Summary: This study confirms the impact of short-term exposure to printing shop particles (PSPs) on heart rate variability (HRV) among healthy volunteers and suggests that the use of an air purifier can reduce particle concentration and improve autonomic nervous system activity.

Nighttime salivary cortisol as a biomarker of stress and an indicator of worsening quality of life in patients with head and neck cancer: A cross-sectional study

Marla S. P. Cruz et al.

Summary: This study assessed the association between stress levels and quality of life among individuals with head and neck cancer. The results showed a negative association between stress levels and quality of life. Nighttime salivary cortisol had slightly better accuracy than the Perceived Stress Scale in detecting patients with the worst quality of life.

ASSOCIATION OF SALIVARY STEROID HORMONES AND THEIR RATIOS WITH TIME-DOMAIN HEART RATE VARIABILITY INDICES IN HEALTHY INDIVIDUALS

Egle Mazgelyte et al.

Summary: The study found significant associations between HRV measures and salivary cortisol and DHEA levels, indicating the role of cortisol and DHEA in mediating between two stress-sensitive homeostatic systems. Additionally, physiological stress indicators (HRV) demonstrated greater intraindividual stability compared to biochemical biomarkers (salivary steroid hormones) within a short period of time.

Summary: Late-night consumption of easily digestible and slowly digestible meals had different effects on healthy young males. Both types of meals increased HPA activity, but had minimal impact on ANS activity. Additionally, consumption of slowly digestible meal significantly disrupted sleep.

Xiu-Cheng Li et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between psychological disorders and erectile dysfunction (ED) in patients with different degrees of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS). The findings showed a negative correlation between the severity of ED and psychological symptoms in patients with moderate-to-severe CP/CPPS.
