Enhanced thermoelectric performance by lone-pair electrons and bond anharmonicity in the two-dimensional Ge2Y2 family of materials with Y = N, P, As, or Sb

Ao Lou et al.

Summary: Using density functional theory and the Boltzmann transport equation, the charge, thermal transport, and thermoelectric properties of two-dimensional Ge2Y2 (Y = N, P, As, or Sb) monolayers were studied. The lone-pair electrons have a significant influence on the lattice thermal conductivity, leading to ultralow thermal conductivity. This provides a new mechanism for designing and optimizing 2D thermoelectric materials with high thermoelectric conversion efficiency.

TransOpt. A code to solve electrical transport properties of semiconductors in constant electron-phonon coupling approximation

Xin Li et al.

Summary: TransOpt is a Fortran code designed to calculate electrical transport coefficients of semiconductor materials using Boltzmann transport theory and the constant electron-phonon coupling approximation. The code interfaces with VASP and utilizes first-principles calculations as well as electron-phonon data from Quantum Espresso for accurate results. Transport properties such as electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and electronic thermal conductivity can be determined by TransOpt.

Importance of quadratic dispersion in acoustic flexural phonons for thermal transport of two-dimensional materials

Armin Taheri et al.

Summary: Solutions of the Peierls-Boltzmann transport equation using inputs from density functional theory calculations have been successful in predicting the thermal conductivity in a wide range of materials. In the case of two-dimensional (2D) materials, the accuracy of this method can depend highly on the shape of the dispersion curve for flexural phonon (ZA). As a universal feature, very recent theoretical studies have shown that the ZA branch of 2D materials is quadratic. However, many prior thermal conductivity studies and conclusions are based on a ZA branch with linear components. Our results show that even small linear to pure quadratic corrections to the shape of the long-wavelength ZA branch can substantially change the predicted value, its convergence and anisotropy, as well as phonon lifetimes and mean free path. Having a pure quadratic ZA dispersion can improve the convergence speed and reduce uncertainty in this computational framework when different exchange-correlation functionals are used in the density functional theory calculations.

Summary: The study extends the calculation of Hubbard parameters, including onsite Hubbard U and intersite Hubbard V, using the DFPT method, and generalizes the formalism from norm-conserving to ultrasoft and projector-augmented wave formulations. Through benchmarking DFPT against conventional real-space Hubbard linear response, the effectiveness of the extended Hubbard formulation in determining the crystal structure and energetics of Li intercalation is demonstrated.
