Inferring causal relations from observational long-term carbon and water fluxes records

Emiliano Diaz et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a methodology based on causal discovery methods to infer spatial patterns of causal relations between key variables of carbon and water cycles. The proposed methodology addresses the issues of noise levels and variable coupling in convergent cross-mapping (CCM) and combines temporal bootstrapping decision scores with information-geometric causal inference (IGCI) to derive robust and stringent cross-map skill scores.

Stable gap-filling for longer eddy covariance data gaps: A globally validated machine-learning approach for carbon dioxide, water, and energy fluxes

Songyan Zhu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel method, Random Forest Robust (RFR), for filling data gaps in time series of CO2, water, and energy fluxes. The RFR method outperforms the standard marginal distribution sampling (MDS) method, improving R2 values by 15% (RFR3) and 30% (RFR10) and reducing uncertainty by 70%. The RFR method shows significant improvements in filling gaps for heat and water fluxes compared to CO2 fluxes, and performs well for longer gaps.

Predicting carbon and water vapor fluxes using machine learning and novel feature ranking algorithms

Xia Cui et al.

Summary: In the past decade, gap-filling eddy covariance flux data using quantitative approaches has increased, with various methods proposed. The study compared NEE and ET gap-filling/prediction performance of different models and feature selection methods using data from agroecosystems in the US. Results showed that SVM/RF models with top informative features could systematically construct accurate prediction models for NEE and ET.
