Seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton phosphorus stress in temperate Jiaozhou Bay, North China

Xia Zhang et al.

Summary: The study presented the seasonal distributions of alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) in Jiaozhou Bay, North China, which showed variations in different seasons along with phosphorus concentrations, planktonic biomass, and other environmental factors. The findings suggested relief from phosphate limitation for phytoplankton and bacteria in winter, while persistent phosphate stress in other three seasons. Additionally, it was hypothesized that plankton might compensate for phosphate deficiency by promoting enzyme production and improving enzyme affinity.

Enzyme promiscuity in natural environments: alkaline phosphatase in the ocean

Abhishek Srivastava et al.

Summary: The study revealed that marine APase enzyme exhibits promiscuous behavior, performing not only P-monoesterase activity but also P-diesterase, P-triesterase, and sulfatase activities. APase is highly efficient as a P-monoesterase at high substrate concentrations, while promiscuous activities are more efficient at low substrate concentrations.

Phosphorus as an integral component of global marine biogeochemistry

Solange Duhamel et al.

Summary: Recent research has revealed the complexity and dynamism of the marine phosphorus cycle, closely connected to carbon, nitrogen, and metal cycling. This has important implications for marine ecosystems and highlights the need for further study in this area.

Phosphorus cycling in the upper waters of the Mediterranean Sea (PEACETIME cruise): relative contribution of external and internal sources

Elvira Pulido-Villena et al.

Summary: The study conducted during the PEACETIME cruise in the phosphate-depleted regions of the Mediterranean Sea showed low variability in phosphate concentrations but significant variations in alkaline phosphatase activity. The contribution of atmospheric deposition and diapycnal fluxes to phosphate supply in the upper layer of the Mediterranean Sea was comparable, challenging the traditional idea that new P is mainly received from the atmosphere under stratification conditions. This study raises questions about the biogeochemical response of marine oligotrophic regions to changes in atmospheric inputs and stratification regimes.
