SAFRON: Stitching Across the Frontier Network for Generating Colorectal Cancer Histology Images

Srijay Deshpande et al.

Summary: Automated synthesis of histology images has the potential to develop data-efficient deep learning algorithms. We proposed a framework called SAFRON that can generate large high-resolution tissue images by integrating stitching in its loss function. Our framework is efficient and produces images of high quality, as evaluated by pathologists.

Selective synthetic augmentation with HistoGAN for improved histopathology image classification

Yuan Xue et al.

Summary: The study introduces a conditional GAN model called HistoGAN for generating realistic histopathology image patches based on class labels, and explores a novel synthetic augmentation framework. Significant improvements in classification performance can be achieved by selectively adding image patches generated by HistoGAN instead of directly expanding the training set.

Genetic mutation and biological pathway prediction based on whole slide images in breast carcinoma using deep learning

Hui Qu et al.

Summary: This study developed a deep-learning model to predict genetic mutations and biological pathway activities directly from whole-slide images. By using histopathology images, the model could predict point mutations and copy number alterations of genes, as well as activities of canonical pathways. The visualization of weight maps in tumor tiles helped understand the decision-making process of deep-learning models.

Style Consistent Image Generation for Nuclei Instance Segmentation

Xuan Gong et al.

Summary: The limitation of insufficient data with detailed annotation due to high cost and the domain gap between images from different organs and collections hinder the application of machine learning in medical image analysis. To address the challenges in nuclei instance segmentation, this work proposes a method to generate style consistent histopathology images and establishes a novel instance segmentation framework integrating a generator and discriminator for adversarial training to improve segmentation performance. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms previous nuclei segmentation methods on three public datasets.
