Effects of Vitamin D3 Supplementation and Resistance Training on 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Status and Functional Performance of Older Adults: A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial

Rudolf Aschauer et al.

Summary: Vitamin D3 supplementation does not have additive effects on muscle strength and performance in older adults during resistance training. However, it can improve vitamin D status. Resistance training positively affects muscle endurance and arm curl test.

Effects of an increased habitual dietary protein intake followed by resistance training on fitness, muscle quality and body composition of seniors: A randomised controlled trial

Sandra Unterberger et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of increasing protein intake in older adults through dietary supplementation and determine whether this increase would lead to greater improvements when combined with resistance training. The results showed that a substantial increase in protein intake was achievable within 17 weeks in community-living elderly individuals. However, the additional protein intake had minor effects on body composition and did not impact physical performance or muscle quality.

Calcifediol (25OH Vitamin D3) Deficiency: A Risk Factor from Early to Old Age

Roger Bouillon et al.

Summary: Vitamin D deficiency has adverse effects on both skeletal and extra-skeletal health. The optimal level of vitamin D remains a subject of debate. Observational studies suggest a link between low vitamin D levels and increased infection risk and cardiovascular events, but intervention studies have not shown clear benefits on these outcomes. Pregnancy supplementation with vitamin D reduces the risk of certain complications. The role of vitamin D in neurodegenerative diseases is still unclear. Vitamin D supplementation may have a marginal effect on overall mortality risk, particularly in elderly individuals with low vitamin D levels.

Glutathione: A Samsonian life-sustaining small molecule that protects against oxidative stress, ageing and damaging inflammation

Carlos A. Labarrere et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress and inflammation are major factors in both local and systemic diseases. The tripeptide glutathione (GSH) plays a crucial role in maintaining proper redox cell signaling and limiting excessive oxidative stress. GSH activates the Keap1-Nrf2-ARE pathway to control the expression of genes that regulate antioxidants, inflammation, and the immune system. GSH depletion may be central to the pathophysiology, immune response, severity, and mortality of inflammatory diseases and COVID-19. Enhancing GSH levels could be a key therapy to reduce severity and fatal outcomes in these diseases.

The obesity paradox is mostly driven by decreased noncardiovascular disease mortality in the oldest old in China: a 20-year prospective cohort study

Yuebin Lv et al.

Summary: This study reported the association between BMI and mortality risk in the oldest old population in China from 1998 to 2018. The findings showed reverse J-shaped associations between BMI and cardiovascular disease, non-cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality, with decreased risk in the overweight and mild obesity range. Overweight and obesity were significantly associated with decreased non-cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality, but not with cardiovascular disease mortality.

Summary: This meta-analysis study found that the serum levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) were significantly higher in hypertensive patients compared to normotensive subjects, indicating that serum MDA may serve as a non-invasive biomarker of oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction.

Vitamin D and Hospital Admission in Older Adults: A Prospective Association

Avril Beirne et al.

Summary: This study found an independent prospective association between vitamin D deficiency and increased hospitalization among older adults. Lower vitamin D concentrations were associated with higher rates of ED attendance and hospital admission, highlighting the potential importance of vitamin D supplementation beyond bone health in this population. Further investigation through randomized controlled trials is needed to evaluate current recommendations regarding vitamin D supplementation.
