Characterization of the novel SARS-CoV-2 Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of concern and its global perspective

Shailendra K. Saxena et al.

Summary: Omicron is the latest variant of concern of SARS-CoV-2, with more mutations compared to the previous Delta variant. Fifteen of these mutations are located in the receptor-binding domain of the spike glycoprotein, which may affect transmissibility, infectivity, antibody neutralization, and vaccine efficacy. The study provides insights into the mutational hotspots of Omicron and its global impact on transmission, testing, and immunity.

C-reactive protein level predicts need for medical intervention in pregnant women with SARS-CoV2 infection: A retrospective study

Ryutaro Yamamoto et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed COVID-19 positive pregnant women and identified fever, C-reactive protein (CRP), and platelet count as indicators for medical intervention. The study found that using a CRP cutoff of 1.28 mg/dL on days 4-6 after symptom onset could accurately predict the need for medical intervention in pregnant patients. This triage method could be helpful in determining appropriate hospitalization indications for pregnant women in future outbreaks.

sFlt-1/PlGF ratio in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy in patients affected by COVID-19

Chiara Maria Soldavini et al.

Summary: COVID-19 pregnant patients have a higher prevalence of Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy (HDP) compared to non-COVID-19 controls. Patients with worse disease progression also have higher rates of obesity and other comorbidities. However, the sFlt1/PlGF ratio does not correlate with the severity of this infection.

Preeclampsia and COVID-19: the Role of Inflammasome Activation

Denise C. Cornelius et al.

Summary: Controlled immune activation and balance are crucial for women's reproductive health and successful pregnancy outcomes. Aberrant activation of inflammasomes, which mediate immune activation, has been found to play a role in the development and progression of women's reproductive health and pregnancy-related disorders. Increased inflammasome activation is associated with various reproductive disorders and pregnancy-associated disorders, including preeclampsia, as well as the COVID-19 disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Identifying mechanisms of pathophysiology and potential therapeutic targets for these disorders is of great importance.

Pregnancy alters interleukin-1 beta expression and antiviral antibody responses during severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection

Morgan L. Sherer et al.

Summary: Pregnant women with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection showed increased interleukin-1 beta levels and reduced antispike receptor-binding domain immunoglobulin G titers, with lower levels of neutralizing antibody compared to nonpregnant women. Placental inflammation and inhibited maternal transfer of neutralizing antibodies were observed, potentially impacting the efficacy of COVID-19 treatment during pregnancy. Ongoing research is needed to fully understand the long-term implications of these findings on neonatal health.

Epidemiological dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 VOC Gamma in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Filipe Romero Rebello Moreira et al.

Summary: The research investigated the spread of the Gamma variant of the coronavirus in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between December 2020 and May 2021, and found that this variant spread rapidly, leading to the third local epidemic wave. Molecular clock analysis and Bayesian phylogeographic reconstruction showed that the variant began circulating locally in early 2021 and rapidly reached a frequency of over 70% in just 7 weeks. Additionally, comparative analysis of RT-qPCR cycle threshold (Ct) values indicated that the Gamma variant induces higher viral loads.

SARS-CoV-2 colonization of maternal and fetal cells of the human placenta promotes alteration of local renin-angiotensin system

Sonam Verma et al.

Summary: The study found that SARS-CoV-2 virus colonizes cells expressing ACE2 in the placenta, leading to a significant reduction of ACE2 levels in infected placentas. Infection affects the alteration of placental RAS, potentially causing adverse hemodynamic outcomes such as abnormal blood pressure and pre-eclampsia.
