High-performance Kerr microresonator optical parametric oscillator on a silicon chip

Edgar F. Perez et al.

Summary: The authors developed an optical parametric oscillator based on the third order nonlinearity in a silicon nitride microresonator, which has high conversion efficiency and high output power. This oscillator can generate coherent light at wavelengths that are dramatically different from the pump laser, enabling flexible access to relevant wavelengths. This technology has great potential for applications in quantum information science, metrology, and sensing.

Active tuning of dispersive waves in Kerr soliton combs

Yoshitomo Okawachi et al.

Summary: Kerr soliton combs operate in the anomalous group-velocity dispersion regime and can be actively tuned for spectral shaping of the soliton spectrum. Active tuning of dispersive-wave (DW) wavelength is demonstrated through wavelength-controllable avoided mode crossing, allowing for post-fabrication control of the comb lines' power and position.

A photonic integrated circuit-based erbium-doped amplifier

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers have revolutionized optical communications and laser technology, but their practical use is limited by insufficient output power. This study demonstrates a photonic integrated circuit-based erbium amplifier that achieves high output power and gain, surpassing state-of-the-art semiconductor amplifiers. By applying ion implantation to low-loss silicon nitride photonic integrated circuits, various fiber-based devices can be miniaturized.

Parametric sideband generation in CMOS-compatible oscillators from visible to telecom wavelengths

Renato R. Domeneguetti et al.

Summary: A method is proposed to generate widely separated first sidebands using four-wave mixing in optical parametric oscillators on photonic chips. By exploiting higher-order transverse modes and dispersion engineering, single sideband fields covering visible and telecom spectral regions can be produced. The approach demonstrates a change in parametric oscillation dynamics and the ability to tailor spectral positions of signal and idler fields.

Optically referenced 300 GHz millimetre-wave oscillator

Tomohiro Tetsumoto et al.

Summary: The integration of low-noise stimulated Brillouin scattering process, dissipative Kerr soliton comb, and optical-to-electrical conversion has led to the generation of a 300 GHz signal with a phase noise of -100 dBc Hz(-1). The optical frequency division via optical frequency combs has revolutionized microwave metrology and shows great potential for application in the millimeter-wave and terahertz-wave domains. Disipative Kerr solitons in integrated photonic chips are emerging as a leading technology with ultrahigh repetition rates in the millimeter-wave and terahertz-wave fields.
