Flipped classrooms in higher education during the COVID-19 pandemic: findings and future research recommendations

Summary: The flipped classroom approach has gained significant attention in the past decade due to its potential to enhance student engagement and active learning. This paper presents a systematic literature review of studies on online flipped classrooms in higher education during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings suggest that those who have successfully used flipped classroom approaches in face-to-face or blended learning environments were more successful in online environments as well. The review highlights the need for further research on different aspects of online delivery of flipped classrooms.

However, during the pandemic, both students and teachers face challenges in adapting to online or hybrid learning. This study investigates the readiness of university students for flipped classroom learning during the pandemic era and finds that the intention to participate in the flipped classroom setting is influenced by readiness and perceived control, regardless of learning mode.

Development of a tailor-made surgical online learning platform, ensuring surgical education in times of the COVID19 pandemic

Summary: An online-only, virtual curriculum was implemented for undergraduate surgical education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Medical students who prepared for exams using the video-based online platform achieved significantly higher scores compared to students who used standard surgical text books. This study demonstrates that video-based virtual education can be a realistic alternative to traditional teaching methods in times of restricted access to the operating theatre.
