Elemental-Migration-Assisted Full-Color-Tunable Upconversion Nanoparticles for Video-Rate Three-Dimensional Volumetric Displays

Kwang Rok Mun et al.

Summary: In this study, video-rate color three-dimensional (3D) volumetric displays were demonstrated using elemental-migration-assisted full-color-tunable upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs). By adjusting the intermediate shell thickness between the core and the sensitizer-doped second shell, red-green orthogonal upconversion luminescence (UCL) was achieved. Highly efficient red-green-blue orthogonal UCL and full-color tunability were achieved in the UCNPs through a combination of elemental-migration-assisted color tuning and selective photon blocking. 3D volumetric displays were fabricated using a UCNP-polydimethylsiloxane composite, allowing for the creation of 3D color images and motion pictures.

Low-temperature open-air synthesis of PVP-coated NaYF4:Yb,Er,Mn upconversion nanoparticles with strong red emission

Lewis E. MacKenzie et al.

Summary: In this study, alpha-phase NaYF4:Yb,Er,Mn upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were synthesized using a more convenient method. The synthesis requires lower temperatures and reaction time, and the resulting UCNPs can disperse in water and organic solvents and undergo further surface modification. The optimized co-doping level greatly enhances red emission.

Barium yttrium fluoride based upconversion nanoparticles as dual mode image contrast agents

Padmaja Parameswaran Nampi et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the suitability of Yb3+ and Er3+-doped BaYF5 upconversion nanoparticles as dual labeled contrast agents for bioimaging, showing potential for both optical and X-ray ?CT contrast imaging. The synthesized UCNPs were characterized to have a truncated cuboidal and/or truncated octahedral morphology, with a zeta potential value beneficial for cell permeability. The particles were non-toxic to endothelial cells up to a certain concentration, and exhibited intense green upconversion photoluminescence when excited at a specific wavelength.
