Vanilla calamitosa (Orchidaceae), a new aphyllous species from eastern Brazil

Vanilla calamitosa is described and illustrated from southern Bahia. Its conservation status is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR). Vanilla calamitosa is the second known aphyllous species in South America and the sixth of the Americas. The other aphyllous species in the continent is V. penicillata, which has occasionally been misidentified as V. eggersii.
